Not what I was expecting at all. The theme of "the girlfriend curse" really has nothing to do with the actual story. The only chick lit I know to compare it to is Marian Keyes' "Rachel's Holiday" because both main characters spend time in a treatment center type place, although for different reasons.

This is a very long, drawn out story that I thought was GOING somewhere. I'm disappointed in the plot, the lack of excitement, etc. There were more typos than I could keep track of, but for a desperate time of nothing else to read -- it fills the time. LOTS of time.

Peg Silver is the Ultimate Girlfriend. She is the woman that makes a man face his fear of commitment. Only there's one problem... They always run scared to death from her and within 6 months they are married. Now were not just talking one past boyfriend. But every single boyfriend that she has had in the last 10 years ends up married to the next woman that he lands in bed with, within six months.
Peg is devasted by this epiphany. Fearing the worst she gets out of New York to start a brand new quiet life in Manshire, Vermont. Only there is another set back when the beautiful new farm house that she aquired has many unwelcome friends occupying it. So Peg has to find some where to live for a month.
What better place than Inward Bound: a month long retreat for the romantically impaired. Her choice has nothing to do with treating her self, but all to do with a certain hunky man that she met on the train ride in who mentioned this was were he was headed. But the place soon starts to grow on her even though the metaphores are mind numbing and she can't seem to catch a break.
As the book progresses, Peg starts to discover things, like she's obsessed with sex, has a horrible sarcasm problem, might be an alcholic, but more important she might be falling in love with the owner of the camp, Linus Bester, who it seems owns the town of Manshire and has a lot of strings he can pull and a lot of people who are willing to do anything for him and is currently unavailable.
This book is very cute and funny. It starts out kinds slow, but it picks up. I read the last 3/4 of the book in one sitting in a few hours. Peg is a delight to read about and I found myself rooting for her and her awkward siuations the entire book. This is my first Valerie Frankel novel and I am happy to say that it wont be my last.

After suffering through Frankel's The Not-So-Perfect Man, I wasn't sure what to expect from The Girlfriend Curse. However, I found that I really enjoyed the concept behind the tale.
Essentially, a 20-something woman who has a gift--or curse-- for spurring her ex-boyfriends to marry right after they break up with her. Convinced that part of the problem is that she just doesn't fit in in New York City, Peg moves to Vermont to start over. Things don't go quite according to plan, however, and forces her to re-evaluate what she wants--and doesn't want--from a relationship.
The possible negatives: (1)It was shallow. (2) Much of the action was unlikely. (3) There were a few frank comments about sex and a fair number of curse words.
It was an light, entertaining read. Not the chick lit ideal by any stretch, but a good way to kill a few hours if you are willing to suspend reality and are okay with reading fluff.

This is not the kind of book I typically read. Entertaining for the most part, but somewhat shallow.
This book was a lot of fun. Nice quick summer read, the characters were quirky, and the book was more unpredictable then the back cover would make you believe.
I expected more from this book. Nonetheless, it is still an easy read.

This book is adorable! It's funny and light and you will laugh out loud. The main character is blunt and honest but it brings the best out in people. Best Bargain Book from Amazon I have ever gotten.

This was just OK. I had a hard time getting through it. It actually took me all week to read.
My first Frankel read and I liked it enough to try another. It was cute, funny and above average chick-lit.
Peg Silver's latest boyfriend get married a few months after dumping her. She soon realizes that this has happened with her last seven boyfriends. Fed up, she leaves Manhattan and moves to Vermont where she ends up enrolling in Inward Bound, a month long course for the lovelorn. There she flirts with Ray and gets to know Linus. Quick, easy chick lit read.

This book is a fun quick read. A good choice for a cold/rainy afternoon on the couch.
