I know others cherish this book as their favorite mystery of all time, but I couldn't make it through! I found the character portrayals interesting, but the plot slow moving, and the humor too dry to be "hilarious" as others have found it.

This is Crispin's next to last book in his "Fen" series. However, the last one is just a collection of stories. I think he wanted to have some fun---well, more than usual---with his characters. So there is a lot of humorous situations in the book, but nothing funny enough to laugh out loud about.

However, I found parts of it tedious, and was glad when I finished the book.

I didn't read this series in any sort of order, and you don't need to. In fact, the last one I have to read is the first in the series.
