Intriguing tale of a young penniless couple involved in materialistic & ethically barren high society - can be seen as an examination of Lily & Selden from 'The House of Mirth' if they had gotten together. Wharton is reliably acid in her observations on the rich & amoral and especially perceptive in tracing how Susy & Nick's feelings about their life choices evolve. Not as taut as her other works but worth it, if only for the scathing writing on society follies that are still very much alive today. Entourage fans: this book is the basis for the highbrow script Vince turned down. Absolutely hilarious to think of the Vince character anywhere near this story!
