The book was very brief, but did discuss all the relevant issues: scientists agree (at least privately) that the universe had a beginning--and before that time there was nothing. I imagine there are a few ramifications to this realization.

Of course, guys like Hawking are working hard with theories like "imaginary time," trying to show there is no such thing as a "beginning" of the universe. However, Jastrow seemed to fly over the top of all this and adequately prove his point (at least to me).
