His choice could not have been more unlikley. Joy was an American, a divorce, an ex-Communist, and a former atheist. Yet this extraordinary and fascinating woman made a great impact on Lewis and his writings in the short time they had together.
A brilliant intellectual, Joy had aquired a Master's degree and published two books of poetry and a novel by age 25. However, in 1946 her failing marriage brought her to the point of desperation.
