Storyline involves an extended but poor Southern family. For years, the father has been demanding his children (and others) help him search for gold. They dig huge craters instead of actual farming. There are also a few minor subplots.

The writing and vocabulary are junior high level. In its time, the novel was controversial for it's sexual references and overtones. By today's standards, the novel is pretty tame.

Overall, I was not impressed. Caldwell is not in the class of Hemingway, Faulkner or Steinbeck. I will not seek out further works by this author.

2 cassettes ABRIDGED Read by Burt Reynolds. Set in the Southern US, published in 1933, it was ahead of its time with its raw passionate story of love and death during hard times.
