If only Juan Cabrillo and the Oregon were real, maybe we WOULD see the Dali Lama restored to Tibet! Of course, it takes a lot of planning and split second execution and sometimes a Plan B but Juan and his team manage to pull it off. Getting there is the fun for us readers! A classic Cussler and a great read.
I liked the complicated cons the crew of the Oregon pulled with elaborate costumes and disguises. Seemed more like a troup of actors than mercenaries. However these guys are mercenaries working for profit though usually working towards a worthy goal. They just work "at any cost" to get their objective completed. Some of their actions were terrorist-like and that was disturbing. They were hired to return the golden Buddha to Tibet and then they volunteered to put the Dhali Lama back in power. This led to a war between the Russians, the Chinese and the Tibetans.
Had I known that was the ultimate goal in this novel, I wouldn't have read it. I don't like war stories and don't condone terrorist activities so I had trouble finishing this as the military stuff took over the second half of the book. I was totally turned off with all the bloodshed. If you don't mind (or even like) this type of story, you will enjoy this book. It is well written and very complicated with lots and lots of characters.

Interesting story and premise. More language than I remember with Clive Cussler in past stories. Probably won't read the rest in the series.
I read Cussler's books to "preview" them years ago as he was the only author my son liked. They were wholesome and entertaining, and even if he got the girl in the end, it was subtly noted. No so now. No overt sex but lots of inuendo and references, and as I said, language. I would NOT let my son read this if he was in middle school!!

Excellent introduction to the Oregon series and kept my attention with the deft handling of history, thriller and contemporary settings
Cussler fans won't be disappointed with this first book in the Oregon Files.
LOVE Clusser's serries...lol better than James Bond!
I really liked this book. I had read other books with Juan Cabrillo and The Company so it was interesting to see the beginning of them. As all of Clive Cusslers books are this one had lots of action and took place in different places. I look forward to reading more of Juan Cabrillo and the Oregon.
Somewhat Different from his Pitt books but Cussler's a good story teller.
If you have ever said to yourself "Boy, I love Clive Cussler, but I also love caper novels. I wish there was a book that combined the two", well, look no further.

This book was Ok. Not what I usually read. It was a light, quick read. My only gripe was there were so many characters and it was hard for me to separate them, even the main character was a little flat. But the action was good and the ending satisfying. I think I'm looking forward to the next one.
Of all of Cusslers characters, his Oregon crew are my favorites. He brings in intriguing historical mystery with great story telling.

Leave it to Clive Cussler to write another perfect caper. Here a group of good mercenaries pull off a heist where all (or almost all) goes according to plan. Sure, it is fantasy to think that all the gadgets and gimmicks are really real and really work and that the good guys have the gimmicks. But forget about that and just sit back and enjoy a good read. This is the first in a new series, The Oregon Files, that Cussler is co-authoring with a new partner. I must admit that the writing is not as polished as in his earlier books--apparently his co-writer just does not yet have skills as smooth as you might wish for. Nevertheless, I intend to read more of this new series. Well, it is several years old now, but it is the first in the Oregon File series.

Enjoyed this book. Full of action and Juan and is crew are so likeable and good at what they do.
kept me on the edge of my seat
I didn't finish reading this book. I had a problem with reading about so many undeveloped characters. I was surprised because I really liked Arctic Drift. But this bunch of characters that are without any standards and buy what ever they need to get the job done (even if illegal) didn't make for a very good read. And the overall message that money buys whatever you need to solve a problem and hiding illegal income in bogus corporations and being a criminal because everyone else is just didn't make a lot of sense. It's like the A-team turned criminal.
Great story! I can't decide if imagining the Oregon and her crew might really exist makes me relieved or terrified.

The plot was a little confusing at times but came together in the end. I look forward to check out his Isaac Bell series as I feel I would enjoy that series better.
