return to gone-away is the next book.....
Portia Blake and her cousin Julian discover a ghost town of Victorian-style houses and begin a summer of adventures.
This is by the author of a favorite series, the Melendy books. Very imaginative characters and situations.
Mystery/adventure book for kids.
a childhood favorite of mine. Lovely book. There's a sequel, too...
Love Enright's Melendy books...my kids (ages 8 & 11) eat 'em up!!
This is my all-time favorite children's book. As another reviewer mentioned, I read this aloud to my children and they fell in love with it, too. If you're a nature lover, Enright will have you entranced by her vivid descriptions. Adults, feel free to pick this one up and enjoy it even if you have no children handy. It is charming.

The children discover a ghost town near a swamp that was once a thriving summer lakeside community - inhabited by two welcoming eccentric seniors, who recount to them some of their memories from the turn of the century and help them create secret "clubhouses." I didn't like this as much as I did the author's trilogy, "The Saturdays," "The Four-Story Mistake," and "Spiderweb for Two," but it is a nice read.
Delightfully fun book for the children to read! Listed as a Sonlight reader.
