It all started with a momma Magpie defending her fallen chick from a young girl, Daphne, and her brothers cat, when a young second son of a Duke, Paul comes to the rescue of Daphne, and giving her a token, a heart shape rock, to harden her heart for life. Unbeknownst to him he gave his stone cold heart away to his savior in the future.
Many years later, loads of journal entries of short letters, fantasizing, events of what Daphne went through, saw, felt, letter to her dead sister, brother and so forth In her personal journal years later. She get left behind at Christmas at her home while her whole family leaves for the country houses, after some tears she grows a back bone and decides to become independent. Until a path that will change her course in the immediate future but that of the Duke she runs into and the event to follow, bargains are made and a hint is started.
Paul will have truths finally revealed, friendships on the mend but his heart will be at risk of turning cold once more when his time of happiness is cut short with a final letter from his monster of a father, revealing the truth of Paul's lineage. Be prepared for multiple shocks, lies and emotions as you read, never once was a dull moment. Told from both POV and with HEA ending.

I loved, loved, loved, Paul's efforts to redeem himself. He was a sensitive guy who hid behind a rogue's facade, trying to hide his painful childhood, his mistakes and regrets, the estrangement of his best friends. And Daphne was the perfect foil to his flaws who believed utterly in the good soul he didn't know he had. A romantic and emotional tale that reminds me yet again of the healing love can bring. 4 stars.

First, what I loved about the book-- mostly, the heroine, Daphne. She was headstrong and pretty modern thinking for a woman of this era (although I'm not sure what the time period was). I also adored the history that she had with our hero, Paul. I so love getting a peek at the childhood of characters and watching them morph into the adults they become for us in these books.
What I didn't love -- that Daphne was so headstrong. Let's face it, she was pretty impetuous and was lucky that her escapades did not land her in more trouble than they did. All in all though, this was a pretty enjoyable book. I read it in only 1 day and when I discovered that there were actually three earlier books in this series, kind of glad that I read it out of order (and if you've read any reviews I write, you know I'm a stickler for NOT reading a series out of order). So now, I can binge the earlier books without having to wait a year to visit the Cavensham heiresses again!
It is not a problem at all reading this book out of order. It does an excellent job of standing on it's own though I'm sure once I get the first three read, I'll probably reread this just to get the full enjoyment of an excellent series.
