This was my first cookbook, given to me when I left home. I learned to make lots of things reasonably well from it, so I thought it would be a good one for my kid, too! There are many others I've collected, but this has a lot of basics and is one of the first places I look to get ideas. I rarely follow a recipe exact anymore, but I still can use it to get me going in the right direction!

i have 3 children [ all over 20 ] and we have multiple copies of this book . they always fight over this book and it ALWAYS belongs to teh one who happens to find a copy . i got each of my kids one and it helps them understand basic cooking . son just requested a new copy as he can not find his . a very good book ! with LOTS of helpful illustrations , which make this book so valuable . also the recipes are not limited to basic cooking , but rather basic cooking is taught with advanced skill recipes . very highly recommended .
