Grace is the eldest of eight daughters (and a young son). Her father is the vicar in Devonshire, England, and serves the Duke of Blackmore's church. This starts out as a comedy with Reverend Augustas Shackleford worrying about marrying off the eight daughters and finding suitable matches and, thus, providing for his only son. One would expect the son to soon reach his majority instead of being a young child.

The new Duke of Blackmore decides to marry one of Reverend Shackleford's daughters. He doesn't care which one. Fortunately, he has met the one he marries, and she's as wild a harridan as one could imagine a country girl to be. However, after marrying Grace, he leaves to check on his far-flung properties. He leaves no word and does not respond to her letters. Grace assumes he wants to discard her, and she decides to help him by doing wild things that a duchess would never consider. Of course, she pays for her indiscretions with the Duke's anger.

Although the Reverend seems to run things, Percy saves the day.
