The first in a trilogy. Beautifully written period piece. A murder mystery, plus a coming of age story for young men in England immediately before the outbreak of WWI

The first book of Anne Perry's five novel series aout World War I. It is both suspenseful and poignant. A wonderful story and a great setup for World War I in England.
Helpful Score: 1
Very good first book in Anne Perry's WWI series. The murder plots drag on a bit too long, but the there is a wonderful background story of England building up to WW1. The two main characters, Matthew and Josesph interesting characters and looking forward to learning more about them in future books. Very good read.
Great read

Joseph's brother, an officer in the Intelligence Service, reveals that their father had been en route to London with a mysterious secret document---allegedly possessing the power to disgrace England and destroy the civilized world. Now that explosive paper has vanished, and Jospeh is left to wonder: How had it fallen into the hands of his father, a quiet countryman?

This is a new time period for Anne Perry (she usually writes novels set in Victorian England) as it is set in 1914. She is a superior author and this book is no exception. It had excitement and twists and held my interest throughout.

Excellent and atmospheric WWI-related novel. Really enjoyed it!
The first book in the new series of five novels that covers the World War I period.
A mystery set in WWI era. A professor's parents are killed in an automobile accident, then one of his favorite students is murdered. The mystery - what is the connection between the two deaths?
Not your usual Perry fare but nonetheless is done extremely well. There are murders and treachery but the description Of England before the advent of World War One is the most striking part of this novel. A really remarkable book.
the story isn't as exciting as her victorian london series. good story but i do prefer the monk series and charlotte & thomas pitt murder series. maybe i just enjoy the time frame farther back than the 1910-1920's

Extremely well written; contains wonderful descriptions of England just prior to WW One. I was glued to the pages; couldn't wait to read the entire series!
