I liked this book and the friendship between two girls who are so unlike is what makes so many friendships work. Naomi Deane and Lizzie Scatterding are orphans who live in the small town of Blackbird Tree. Life isn't always fair and both encounter rough bumps in their young lives that are wrenching. Naomi is serious and frightened of dogs because her father was killed by one and she herself badly injured. Lizzie wants badly to be adopted. A chatterbox, she talks endlessly and Naomi sometimes finds herself tuning out her chatty friend.

When a strange boy named Finn appears both girls are drawn to him and find their friendship strained because of it. Who is Finn? He seems to be an unreal being who just appears and disappears.
When messages come from Scotland for both girls they find that their lives are forever changes. It's a magical book where their dreams are fulfilled in a way neither every thought they would be.

I liked this book a lot. It has some unique characters and it kept me reading wanting to know more. The town Creech creates is full of mysterious characters that keep adding to the story. There's mystery and friendship and the reality of family troubles that can change life in unexpected ways.
