I was not as engaged in this book as others in my book club were. Interesting survey of a period of history, but the book draws no conclusions about the significance of all the American scientists, artists, and doctors who lived and worked in Paris. I loved McCullough's books on Teddy Roosevelt and John Adams and was expecting more depth on individuals.

This book was pure pleasure. David McCullough condenses 70 years into clear and interesting stories of famous and not-so-famous Americans in Paris, ambitious to excel in their work. I especially liked the section about Paris being the medical capital of the world during these years. "From all they learned in Paris, the "medicals" were to exert lasting influence on the profession of medicine in the United States."
McCullough's efforts are sumptuous, enthralling, and inspiring. I highly recommend this book.
