Excellent series
I'd like to be able to say this is a 4-5 star book but I can barely give it a 3.
There just isn't much about this story that you would connect to Nate or Joe Pickett and of course daughter, Sheridan, has to get involved.
Dealing with terrorist in the desert, not saying it couldn't happen but yet I didn't find this believable at all and I couldn't finish it, it just wasn't the 'usual' kind of mess Joe or Nate gets mixed up with and it just didn't ring my bell.

C.J. Box is a favorite author. This series, featuring Joe Pickett, a game warden in Wyoming, reminds me of the Longmire series by Craig Johnson.
I really enjoyed this series, and it should be read in order, as the characters evolve more each book.
This novel features Joe's friend, Nate Romanowski, who is off the grid, recuperating from wounds, and is coerced into helping destroy a domestic terror cell in Wyoming's Red Desert. It's always a great read when Joe and Nate work together.
I highly recommend this series. Great characters, good plots, and Joe is a down-to-earth warden, not a super hero.

I was anxious to read this latest Box novel so I luckily was able to find a copy at the library not long after its release.
This was another solid outing in the Joe Pickett series! I have read all of the previous Joe Pickett novels (this is number 16) and I continue to find this to be one of the best crime/thriller series out there. In this one, Joe's friend and former black ops agent, Nate Romanowski, is offered amnesty for his former crimes if he agrees to travel to the Red Desert in Southern Wyoming to infiltrate and destroy a terrorist cell operating there. When Governor Rulon hears about this, he decides to send Joe Pickett to the Red Desert to try to find out exactly what is going on.
In addition, Joe's daughter, Sheridan had been coerced by her college roommate to accompany her on a camping trip where she ends up in the middle of the terror group in the desert. The group is working on a device that could potentially wreck havoc on America's power grid and communications. Needless to say, Nate and Joe end up in the midst of the ensuing chaos and play a major role in the resolution of the novel. Another high recommendation for this great series.

Another great story with Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski, my favorite character! Nate is unpredictable,an amazing falconer and a fascinating character whereas best friend Joe is a Game Warden, devoted family man and a little boring but lovable.

It's the usual from Box, lots of action, but this time there are Islamic terrorists. You do not want to put a lot of thought into this plot, IMO large pieces of it don't make sense when put together. The lead terrorist is made somewhat sympathetic, so Nate feels kinship with him as in the book with the murderous brothers, but of course he's naive. And Nate seemed pretty slow on the uptake too, once he saw what was going on he shouldn't have felt any surprise at all that someone was going to take it further. The bear's eventual re-appearance was just silly (c'mon, couldn't Box have left that unresolved?). I also felt that the inclusion of Sheridan was completely gratuitous, she didn't have to be in the story. The motive of the fake NSA guys was completely nonsensical after what he tells our boys and the Governor later on. But hey...we get some Joe and Nate bromance (but with eye-rolling dialogue: "Will this be the end for us?") and wish fulfillment with the end of the terrorist plot. Not my favorite of the series, have to say I was mildly disappointed.
Nate is back and gets hired to find a fellow falconer who may or may not be a terrorist, Joe gets hired to find Nate for no good reason, Joe's daughter happens to end up in the middle of a terrorist scheme that made no sense whatsoever; and that the whole story was littered with inconsistencies not only in the time line didn't help the meager plot at all.
The 2 stars are for the 15 pages about Joe hunting a rogue grizzly bear - this is what I expect Joe Pickett books to be about - crimes in the outdoors and nature.
This book felt forced and like a bad comic strip (oh Sheridan, you were so right!) all the way through. Not a recommended read. I do, however, recommend everything else CJ Box has written in the past, some more, some less, but none as horrible as this book. If this would have been the first book I read by this author I would never touch another one of him again. I can not emphasize it enough: his other books are in average worth 4.5 star ratings if one likes this genre.
