In as much as nature draws no definite division line between "trees" and "shrubs", any distinction is necessarily somewhat arbitrary. In general, it may be said that a tree is a woody plant around twelve feet tall or taller and having one main, erect stem with a definite crown of branches. Plants which occasionally develop into tree size but are most often shrubs are included in this guide so that almost any specimen that is of tree size may be identified.« less
