“My name is Anita Blake. Vampires call me “The Executioner”. What I call them isn’t repeatable. — Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folks with fangs. I know better. I’ve seen their victims. I carry the scars… — But now a serial killer is m...  more »

This is the first Anita Blake story, the second I've read. "Guilty Pleasures" is much like "The Laughing Corpse" in structure. Most of the surviving cast continue on in the second title without missing a beat. Makes for a continued fun read. Many like myself enjoy Anita because she is not afraid to swear, carry multiple guns and knives, or make quick work of the bad guy, a la Indiana Jones or any good hard-core detective. Interestingly, she does not drink alcohol.

The first five books:

1 Guilty Pleasures (1993)
2 The Laughing Corpse (1994)
3 Circus of the Damned (1995)
4 The Lunatic Cafe (1996)
5 Bloody Bones (1996)

I really enjoyed the first Anita Blake book by Laurell K. Hamilton. Anita is a strong heroine and the world that Hamilton creates is very engaging. If you like vampires, zombies, and werewolves with a strong female heroine and don't mind a little violence, you'll like this series. This series is not funny, airy romantic comedy. These books have punctuations of humor, but are not light romantic reading.

i prefer the sookie stackhouse series by charlaine harris. i find that heroine a lot more likeable, and the series is overall more humorous and well-planned. the romance is there, but it's more tasteful.

that being said, i am still enjoying this series very much. i thought this book was a clunker, but i'm glad i stuck it out because i'm to book 7 now and the series is really enjoyable. i don't think it's that R-rated and there wasn't even sex until book 6. the crime-solving here isn't as high quality as in the sookie series. a lot of the solutions seem to come from nowhere...

I am not a fan of vampire novels and so when a friend recommended this series to me, it was awhile before I ordered the first book in the Anita Blake series. All I can say now is...WOW! I AM A FAN FOR LIFE!!! *laugh I just ordered books 2 - 4 in the series and will order the rest once those arrive. This book has everything: horror, romance, laughs...it's all here! I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the others to arrive. If you're not a fan of vampire reads, trust me - after this one, you will be. And if you are a fan of vampire reads - this one will be a welcome addition to your library.

Anita Blake is a short, armed, scared, vampire executioner, who also dates a werewolf, a vampire and other men. You have to have an open mind to enjoy this series of books, which can get very descriptive in the violence department (I have to sometimes skip those pages) and quite yummy in the sex details. All of her new books now are issued first in hardcover because she has a legion of fans, then in 10 months in paperback.
Laurel K Hamilton writes 2 different series that she rotates, this one about Anita, and the other about a half breed Fairy Princess named Merry, who also has multiple sex partners (like Anita). I don't understand how the immortals are not bored out of their minds, as many have little to nothing to do, and wish some of the vampires sang, or painted or wrote books, but oh well..
Both series have wonderful descriptive details that keep the mind engaged in the story and quite sorry when the last page is turned. Waiting months and months and months for the next installation is more like a countdown, and I always order her new books in advance, and never lend them out as they might not come back.
Menopause allows me to happily re-read every book, having forgotten all kinds of stuff I can appreciate over and over again.

I love the writer - very good read. A bit distant though - the only character you really establish any relationship with is the main character. And she really only establishes a relationship with you - the other characters are very underdeveloped. But a great writer, and very sarcastic.

This is the first book of an excellent series. I found it quite easy to get sucked into the world of Anita Blake. Unlike the usual vampire/werewolf stories you find, this one focuses on Anita Blake, a Necromancer for hire in a world that accepts that humans aren't necessarily at the top of the food chain. Hamilton creates a world filled with every sort of nightmarish monsters, not simply vampires and werewolves. These bad guys are no secret to the human world....which only adds to the threat they can give to society. If your into the genre, it's a must read and the Anita Blake series, if hook, can provide a long and fruitful series of books that will keep you entertained and involved in her life just as you would in an excellent tv show or movie series.

BUFFY, MOVE OVER!
This is the book that started the whole Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter phenomenon. I swore I'd never get caught up in all the vampires and werewolves and zombies and other paranormal beastie literary mania washing around the country lately. Then I started reading Hamilton's series.
I should know better than to ever say 'never.' Now I'm hooked!

I love vampire stories, and I wasn't too sure about this one, but had heard good things. Turned out to be a great story, very suspenseful and full of interesting characters. Nice to have a strong female lead who doesn't wait around for a man to catch the bad guys, as well as a great villian-ess.

Anita Blake is edgy, tough, smart and very likable. Jean Claude is ...well, he is Jean Claude, possibly the best written romantic vampire ever conceived, and trust me, I have lots of experience with vampire characters! Together, they are so entertaining and enthralling, I was able to look passed the fact that I did not like the nemesis in this book. Actually, I was not all that crazy about the plot in general. LKH's writing style is different than anyone I have encountered before. Her descriptive abilities are second to none and she creates great tension with apparent ease. I look forward to the rest of this series as I have heard it gets grittier and more sexy as I progress. This is a definite must read if only to introduce you to these great main characters!
