This is the first Anita Blake story, the second I've read. "Guilty Pleasures" is much like "The Laughing Corpse" in structure. Most of the surviving cast continue on in the second title without missing a beat. Makes for a continued fun read. Many like myself enjoy Anita because she is not afraid to swear, carry multiple guns and knives, or make quick work of the bad guy, a la Indiana Jones or any good hard-core detective. Interestingly, she does not drink alcohol.

The first five books:

1 Guilty Pleasures (1993)
2 The Laughing Corpse (1994)
3 Circus of the Damned (1995)
4 The Lunatic Cafe (1996)
5 Bloody Bones (1996)

I really enjoyed the first Anita Blake book by Laurell K. Hamilton. Anita is a strong heroine and the world that Hamilton creates is very engaging. If you like vampires, zombies, and werewolves with a strong female heroine and don't mind a little violence, you'll like this series. This series is not funny, airy romantic comedy. These books have punctuations of humor, but are not light romantic reading.

i prefer the sookie stackhouse series by charlaine harris. i find that heroine a lot more likeable, and the series is overall more humorous and well-planned. the romance is there, but it's more tasteful.

that being said, i am still enjoying this series very much. i thought this book was a clunker, but i'm glad i stuck it out because i'm to book 7 now and the series is really enjoyable. i don't think it's that R-rated and there wasn't even sex until book 6. the crime-solving here isn't as high quality as in the sookie series. a lot of the solutions seem to come from nowhere...

I am not a fan of vampire novels and so when a friend recommended this series to me, it was awhile before I ordered the first book in the Anita Blake series. All I can say now is...WOW! I AM A FAN FOR LIFE!!! *laugh I just ordered books 2 - 4 in the series and will order the rest once those arrive. This book has everything: horror, romance, laughs...it's all here! I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the others to arrive. If you're not a fan of vampire reads, trust me - after this one, you will be. And if you are a fan of vampire reads - this one will be a welcome addition to your library.

Anita Blake is a short, armed, scared, vampire executioner, who also dates a werewolf, a vampire and other men. You have to have an open mind to enjoy this series of books, which can get very descriptive in the violence department (I have to sometimes skip those pages) and quite yummy in the sex details. All of her new books now are issued first in hardcover because she has a legion of fans, then in 10 months in paperback.
Laurel K Hamilton writes 2 different series that she rotates, this one about Anita, and the other about a half breed Fairy Princess named Merry, who also has multiple sex partners (like Anita). I don't understand how the immortals are not bored out of their minds, as many have little to nothing to do, and wish some of the vampires sang, or painted or wrote books, but oh well..
Both series have wonderful descriptive details that keep the mind engaged in the story and quite sorry when the last page is turned. Waiting months and months and months for the next installation is more like a countdown, and I always order her new books in advance, and never lend them out as they might not come back.
Menopause allows me to happily re-read every book, having forgotten all kinds of stuff I can appreciate over and over again.

This book introduces Anita Blake, hardcore Vampire Killer. I felt it took me about 50 pages to really get into the book, but after that I was hooked. Not fluffy or romantic, this book is more Anne Rice gothic. Anita is one tough vampire killer!

If Anne rice's vampire chronicles are softcore s/m porn, then "Guilty Pleasures' is extreme hardcore. Whips, chains, dungeons, bloodsports, sadism, masochism, mind control, bestiality, sex and terror....

Its got vampires though. And zombies, ghouls, were-folk. So I guess its better classified as horror. just to make sure, i'm going to have to read more of the series.

Wow, this is a really odd read - NOT a romance, forget what the back cover said. There is ONE kiss and a lot of hinted at really kinky stuff. If you are looking for a Sherilyn Kenyon or a Christine Feehan type vampire novel, go elsewhere. HOWEVER, it is what I would consider a TRUE gothic horror novel. If you like that, go for it.

After reading so much Anne Rice, it was nice to see that vampires don't have to be so "deep". Anita Blake is a very likeable character and it is fun to see a tough chick who doesn't always have the answers or the quick one-liners. I can't wait to read the next one!

I've heard so much about these books, and now I've satisfied my curiosity by reading the first of the series. Tersely written, tightly paced, it's fairly entertaining horror action. Might be too graphic for some people, and I can't say I'm interested enough to continue the series, but Anita certainly takes no prisoners in this first installment.

It took me a while to really get into it. Not sure if it was the fact that I kept getting destracted or not. But once about half way through I was stuck like glue. Anita is someone I can really relate to, I mean other than the fact that she's a vampire hunter, zombie raising, partial detective petite girl with a death wish. I love that she is so bold and brave yet also gets the crap scared out of her. She's quick with the tongue, which can be quite humorous. Jam packed with action that just keeps going and going. Im awaiting the arrival of The Laughing Corpse now and cant wait!!!

With the first book most people are addicted to the series. There is more violence then there is sex in the first few books. And there is a love triangle thing going by the end of Circus of the Damned. In fact, Anita's life get frustrating because of all the crap. Then it gets better with the introduction of some of the best characters like Nathaniel and Micah. Basically, you can get so involved in this book that you start wishing they were real people. Laurell K. Hamilton does such a great job creating these stories and making these characters. It's like each one has a special place in the story and without each one it would all collapse. All in all, you'll get hooked for life--guarenteed!!!

This is an excellent beginning to the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. Some readers and fans of Anita find the latest books a little too raunchy, but the early books in the series have a subtle sensuality that is a true pleasure to read. The diminuitive Anita, a natural-born necromancer (able to raise the dead from their final resting place), gets herself into and out of the most fascinating and thrilling messes. Always a pleasure to read and re-read the early books of this series.

The story was rich in supernatural creatures, a bit of mystery and hilarious moments. I loved it so much, I picked up the whole series (here on PaperBack Swap) and am loving the second book: The Laughing Corpse. This is one of the most addicting series I have read in a long time. Hamilton creates a very believable world with a heroine who isn't too pushy or too weak. She approaches Vampires and all other sort of "baddies" with a fresh look, asking the question "What makes us human and what makes us monsters?" Although on the surface this series is much like a more grown up Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it really gives the reader a whole new insight on the paranormal romance.

I was so glad I was slow to start the Anita Blake series, because after finishing this one, I couldn't wait to start the second one. Now I'm addicted to the series, and waiting the obligatory 6 months for a new release nearly kills me! Guilty Pleasures does start out a little slow, but once you get through the first 20 pages or so and are introduced to Jean Claude, forget about eating or bathing for the next 24 hours. This was the first book I've read by this author, and I loved it. She does a great job writing about a gothic fantasy world and I was really impressed. Anita Blake is not an average dumb twit who does stupid things because she thinks she can (think Stephanie Plum with a brain--sorry Evanovich, I love the Plum books, but Blake makes Plum look like a silly nitwit). She gets herself into trouble, but manages to get herself out again. She's self-reliant and can kick-ass while also admitting she can be scared out of her wits. The character is believable and I'll be reading more of this series!

I really enjoyed this book. I started reading Anne Rice in high school and wasn't aware that there were so many authors writing vamp novels until viral marketing was going on for the first season of HBO's TrueBlood. From there, I found Charlain Harris' great series on Sookie Stackhouse. Like Harris, Hamilton's imaginary world is one in which vampires are known to exist to the general public.
Anita is a well developed character, but I lost track of some of the supporting cast. Since the original copyright is in 1993 and I read it in 2009, some of the technology is dated, but that is easy to overlook. The storyline is good and is from a first person point of view, which I enjoy.
I am looking forward to reading the subsequent novels.

Guilty Pleasures was not the first of the Anita Blake books that I read. I somehow managed to start in the middle, but once I had, I decided that I need to start at the beginning to get the whole story - although each book can pretty much stand alone.

There are a number of things I enjoy about this series. One, there's wit and humor, some dry and some just laugh out loud funny. Anita's a tough chick with a dark sense of humor. She doesn't have all the answers and that's OK. That's one of the things I like about her. She is brave almost to the point of stupid at times, yet she's got great instinct and a strong will to survive no matter what. To put it bluntly, she's definitely the kind of friend you want with you in a bar fight because the other guy is definitely going to lose, yet, she's also the friend that is going to answer your 3:00 a.m. call for help and really be there (even if she's mad about the 3 a m part).

The Anita Blake character is definitely likable, as are a number of the other characters, and being able to read book after book and learn more and more about each character just keeps me hooked.

It took me awhile to get into this book. I love vampire stories, but this one was very different because the vampires in this book are part of the community it is against the law to slay them, well unless they need to be slayed. In comes Anita Blake who not only is a vampire slayer but also raises the dead.

Once I finished the book I did decide that I will probably read the rest in the series. I just hope the rest of them are easier to get into than this one.

This book is the first of the Anita Blake vampire hunter series. It was also, many years ago, my introduction to the world of paranormal fiction/romance. Since then, I've kind of become addicted.

Anita Blake is an animator. That is, she raises zombies for a living. She also moonlights as a vampire hunter, and is on call for the St. Louis Police Department's Regional Preternatural Investigation Team... or RPIT (pronounced Rip-it).

When vampires, who are legal U.S. citizens in LKH's world, start getting murdered, Anita is called to the case by not only the police, but also by Nikolaos, the Master Vampire of the city.

Anita has a serious prejudice against vampires, and at the start of this series, it really shows. She cannot stand vampires. She only agrees to work for them under duress, and only finally solves the crime for them under duress. Not once does she do anything for them willingly.

In this book, we also meet Jean-Claude, who is the owner of Guilty Pleasures, the world's only vampire strip club. He is arrogant, he is gorgeous, and he is French. Anita kind of finds herself minorly attracted to him, but she resists because, well, vampires equal bad.

In the end, Anita does solve the murders. This book mostly focuses on world building and character building, but the plot stays central as well. It's a really nice blend of crime and paranormal fiction. If you haven't read this series, pick up this book. It's a quick read, and a great introduction to LKH's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter. Book Two is on the list to read next, so, stay tuned for: The Laughing Corpse.

Kinda research material of sorts, well needless to say this book goes beyond the romance novels I've heard about. It's action packed, funny and will keep you turning pages to figure it out. A great read for guys and girls and it isn't really all that heavy on the romance so guys pick it up and read it, you'll have something to talk about with the girlfriends. I hear later in the series it gets a little much on the relationships/romance and even sex but I haven't gotten there yet and so far it's keeping me reading so don't dismiss this one, it's a solid book with a good story.

This book has a bunch of characters, which quickly rotate around the central character. I needed a cheat sheet to keep up with them. What was with the wererats? Sort of in the middle of being "left in the dungeon," what appears but wererats to terrify the main character. What is with that? I could see no purpose. Frankly, I don't care for the first book of this series...an unreasonable number of characters who did add nothing to the plot of story, constant "mind-talking" of the main character (I started skimming through all of it), and a lack of connection to me as the reader. Not so good...I'll try book 2 before I hang it up on this series.

I was skeptical about this book in the beginning; it took me over 150 pages to find the book interesting. Now I am hooked and want to read more about Anita and her friends.

Anita Blake is an Animator and Vampire Hunter who lives in a world where Supernatural beings are openly accepted by the government. There are Werewolves, Wererats, Vampires, Ghouls, Zombies, and a myriad of other creatures in this book. 'Guilty Pleasures' is about Anita working with the city's Master Vampire, Nickolaos, to solve a rash of vampire murders that have recently taken place. While reluctant to work this case, Anita is given no choice but to cooperate when the life of one of her closest friends is threatened. While trying to solve the murder's multiple attempts are made on Anita's life, coming close to death on one occasion, and almost becoming a vampire servant in a few others. With the help of Edward, another Vampire Hunter, Anita is able to close to the truth and take out a few deserving vampires along the way.

I would categorize this book under Supernatural Suspense/Murder Mystery. This is not a romance novel in any way. From what I have read in the series reviews the 'Anita Blake Vampire Hunter' series turns Romantic later down the line.

Blurb on back of book:

No one knows the dark desires of the soul better than NYTimes bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. In Guilty Pleasures, she introduces Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Anita's small, dark, and dangerous. But when the city's most powerful vampire comes to her for help, Anita is faced with her greatest fear - a man capable of arousing in her a hunger strong enough to match his own ...

"WHY SHOULD IT SURPRISE ME THAT I WAS ALIVE? ...
There on the right side of my neck was the real thing ... Tiny, diminutive, fang marks. Nikolaos [had] contaminated me ... I bet she thought I'd be scared of her. She was right on that. But I spend most of my waking hours confronting and destroying things that I fear. A thousand-year-old master vampire was a tall order, but a girl's got to have a goal."

If you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv show, you may like this book. It is more gory than the tv show. Anita, the main character, is definitely a woman you don't underestimate, but unfortunately, she often underestimates herself to the point where you wonder why she does her "job". She doesn't come off as loving her job as she states, but then when so many are trying to kill or torture you, why would you? It still was a good read and a good start to the series

I saw this author's name attached to a recommendation on the back of a Kelley Armstrong book. When I finally looked her up and saw the dozens of books she's written, I was truly delighted. It's great finding a new author who is on book 7 or book 17 as it may be for Hamilton.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy Guilty Pleasures one bit and had to force myself to finish reading it. Anita Blake was a difficult character to like or even have any empathy for. She was constantly terrified of the vampires she was around. It completely turned me off. Then Hamilton would describe random things that didn't make any sense.

It seemed as though there wasn't enough description for the things that mattered, and too much random description for stupid things. For example, since Anita was some how bonded to that vampire (can't remember his name), Anita finds herself eating pizza with toppings on it she normally wouldn't eat. Like, she normally likes veggie pizza. Yet she strangely found herself wanting pepperoni and sausage on it. Wow. Very deep. Apparently, the vampire was taking power from her and she needed more strength. Who cares?

Or then Anita ran into her neighbor and Hamilton had to talk about the neighbor's dog a bit. These details ripped me out of the story when I stopped to question why they were there in the first place.

Also, on the cover of the book (got it from the library thank goodness), someone quoted the book to be part thriller, part horror, part erotica or romance (I forget the exact wording). I didn't have many thrills and the only thing erotica or romantic was the unnecessary description of the wererat's genitalia and interest in Anita Blake. Yuck, no thanks.

Am I happy that Hamilton has a following an an audience? Sure. But I have read much better: Kelley Armstrong, Charlaine Harris, Carrie Vaughn to name a few.

At first, I thought maybe the writing would improve in the second book (the library had about the first 5 or 6). No dice. I couldn't muster up any feeling for Anita in the second book either. I do not recommend.

This book introduces Anita Blake, vampire hunter. It pulls you right in within the first couple of chapters. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with its action and sarcasm. I read this in one sitting, and cannot wait to see how the characters come together in the next book, especially Jean-Claude.

I would recommend this book (and possibly the series) as well as LKH's other series about Meredith Gentry (which is my favorite by far).

This book reminds how great the Anita Blake series once was. Here Anita Blake has a job as an animator (raising the dead for information for the police force) and isn't spending any of her time lazing in bed with her posse of wimpy beauteous men, she even has girlfriends and we are introduced to an intriguing character named Edward (I had forgotten all about him!).

This is the book where she meets Jean Claude whose charms she is easily able to resist. Vampires are being murdered and master vampire, Nikolaos (sp?) demands her expertise to track down the killer. Here Anita is still known as the "Executioner" and lives by her words "I don't date vampires. I kill them." In order to get more information into the secret underground vampire scene she pals around with vampire junkie Phillip. Phillip is the first inkling into Hamilton's obsession with weak-willed, beautiful man-boys who show up and take up residence in later books. Phillip's character is more than physical perfection though, he is sympathetic in a way and a useful tool to progress the plot of this book.

The Anita in this book is strong-willed, independent, judgmental and abrasive but has a wicked barbed tongue which I find missing in later books. The black humor lightens up the darkness and makes Anita approachable while in later books there is little, if anything, left to like about the character who is obsessed with power, sex and is often just plain mean. I may reread the first few books but will stop when the ardour makes its appearance.

I started way out of turn. I was in the Airport and read Book 14 Danse Macabre and was so intrigued I went out and got the first 1-4 in the series. It was driving me crazy to start the beginning because of the tangled web Anita has herself in, in book 14. I needed to see how she got to where she was.

It was a little slow, but I got to see a different side of Anita and start to see her break down. She is more human and not so Super Human.

Not alot of the sexuality you will find later one in the books. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and love how the writer finds interesting ways to get her out of tight situations.

Personally, I like Anita Blake because she's a kick-ass heroine. The only thing I don't like about her is her prudishness (is that a word? LOL) and she can be so stubborn and pigheaded. Even though I don't like those things about her, she's still an exciting character. I've read several series (Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, etc), but this one is my all time favorite.

Anita Blake is edgy, tough, smart and very likable. Jean Claude is ...well, he is Jean Claude, possibly the best written romantic vampire ever conceived, and trust me, I have lots of experience with vampire characters! Together, they are so entertaining and enthralling, I was able to look passed the fact that I did not like the nemesis in this book. Actually, I was not all that crazy about the plot in general. LKH's writing style is different than anyone I have encountered before. Her descriptive abilities are second to none and she creates great tension with apparent ease. I look forward to the rest of this series as I have heard it gets grittier and more sexy as I progress. This is a definite must read if only to introduce you to these great main characters!

It was okay...certainly not as entertaining as, "Dead Witch Walking," or "Dead Until Dark." Something about the writing irritated me. Perhaps it was all the, "Peachy keens," or "bully for me." It seemed affected and unnecessary. Plus, I'm quite aware of how small Anita Blake is. I should have kept track of how many times her size, or lack thereof, was mentioned. I GET IT, she's LITTLE. In fact, I wonder if she's a midget, because although Hamilton went through great length to state she was small, she never said how small...so midget is a possibility. Anyway, it's good pulp fiction, and a fun afternoon read, but I'm not going out of my way to find the rest in the series.

This is the first book of an excellent series. I found it quite easy to get sucked into the world of Anita Blake. Unlike the usual vampire/werewolf stories you find, this one focuses on Anita Blake, a Necromancer for hire in a world that accepts that humans aren't necessarily at the top of the food chain. Hamilton creates a world filled with every sort of nightmarish monsters, not simply vampires and werewolves. These bad guys are no secret to the human world....which only adds to the threat they can give to society. If your into the genre, it's a must read and the Anita Blake series, if hook, can provide a long and fruitful series of books that will keep you entertained and involved in her life just as you would in an excellent tv show or movie series.

It's such a highly recommended book, and it just didn't live up to my expectations. It was not consistently good. In my opinion, too much plot for such a short book. Not enough introduction to the characters or character development with so many characters for such a short book. Weak climax. I felt like it was gross for the sake of being gross. Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.
Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along

The only reason the Anita Blake series made it on my reading challenge list was because of the rumors I had heard about the books. Ive always been told that Laurell K. Hamilton writes graphic, detailed sex scenes. I was embarrassed the first time I ever read a story in which characters engaged in sexual acts, but Ive come a long way since then. Now I love a well described sexual encounter and pray for them in the novels in which the characters have sizzling chemistry. I put the first book in the Anita Blake series on my list so I could try out the series to see if I liked it. After finishing the entire Hush, Hush series within the past three days (you heard read me rightI binged), I needed a satisfying sex scene to alleviate all that tension so I turned to the author I heard so much about. I wont ruin the Hush, Hush series for anyone but if youre looking for something steamy, you might want to look away from young adult novels. Silly me for not accounting for the target audience in my expectations of the books. Never again!

Moving on to Guilty Pleasures, this book didnt feel like a guilty pleasure at all.

I didn't expect much from this book as most vampire/romance stories I've read seemed to be kind of adolescent. This book was heavier on the gore and blood and guts, as well as the mystery, and any romance was incidental. It reminded me a lot of the "...In Death" books by J.D. Robb, which I enjoy quite a lot. I'm already on Bk 3 and I only started the series earlier this week. I highly recommend it.
