Atkinson received the Pulitzer Prize for History for "An Army at Dawn," the first book in his trilogy of the American army in Europe and North Africa during World War II. Many believe he also should have received that award for his second book, "The Day of Battle."
I really looked forward to reading the final book in the trilogy, but was somewhat disappointed with its beginning chapters on the invasion of France. Perhaps because I have already read so much on that period, However, after the race across France, Atkinson once again shined in relating the story of the final days of World War II in Europe.
