Summary:
Nathan has been persecuted all of his life because his father is the world's most powerful Black witch. In order to survive, he must escape and find his father before his seventeenth birthday. Unfortunately, everything that he does is tracked and he doesn't know who to trust. Will he be able to receive his gifts from his father or will he be doomed to perish?
My thoughts:
There was a lot of hype around this book before I picked it up. I usually read thing before they get t the point where everyone is talking about them and the movie deal is already in place. I tried very hard to go in with no expectations. I was intrigued with the story. Nathan is a well drawn out character. He is relateable and you really root for him to achieve. The second half of the book is paced really well with a good amount of action. The first half is a little slow, but it is good to build up the characters and the world building, which is England.

This book had some graphic violence happen to the main character that was hard to read at times, but overall this was a fun book and fairly well-developed for a first novel. Nathan is generally likeable, although the plotting toward the end of the book gets a little haphazard and the book ends on a serious cliffhanger. Like, literally in the middle of an action sequence. Nevertheless, I liked it enough to read the second book in the trilogy when it's released next year.
I have to say I almost stopped reading this book after the first chapter or two. The sentence structure was terrible and incomplete and were just random thoughts and I didn't understand what was happening. After a while it got better though. I didn't really enjoy the story though and felt it to be too slow.
Nathan is half White Witch and half Black Witch. He gets tormented by white witches all the time and lives with them as well (though only one doesn't like him). Supposedly his dad is the most hated and feared black witch ever. He wants to meet him, but he doesn't dare to say a word about that. We know he is being tortured. It just seems like things move from scene to scene in strange unexplained ways while reading this book to try to get the plot going, but it doesn't seem to work while reading it. I really wanted to enjoy this book. I don't remember why I put it on my to-read list either. I am sure many people like it but I don't think I'll want to read the rest of the series (which is not like me).

Not really my thing: Harry Potter meets Ender'sGame would, I think, be a fair read-alike comparison. Well-written: the style is very intriguing and readable, but I don't feel that I can give an honest star rating. Fabulous cover art and presentation, which is what drew me to it, and made me want to give it a try. I'm going to pass it on to Daughter #1, who is a huge Harry Potter fan: need to find it a good home, with someone who will appreciate it!
