Not bad, just semi-predictable

Maybe I'm just catching on, but I felt I was one step ahead basically the whole book. & the "big reveal" at the end was not a shock to me. This wasn't as brilliant as some of Christie's other novels, but it's still worth a read.

Ah, Points authoress friend ropes him into another case. At a halloween party, a young girl claims to have witnessed a murder years ago. No one believes her. But then she is dead: drowned in the apple-bobbing tub. So begins Poirots quest for an old murder. Interrogation after interrogation (Keep tabs on the myriad of players.) seem to lead nowhere. One good murder deserves another. Ding dong, pussys in the well. Finally he is able to put it together in a startling conclusion. If you figure out who the murderer is, you will still get some surprises at the end.

Unliked 13-year-old Joyce attends a Halloween party and gets the attention to center on her when she claims she witnessed a murder. No one is buying her story and so she leaves in a huff. However, hours later, her body is back at that house where the party was held, drowned in a tub of bobbing apples. One of Agatha Christie's recurring characters, Mrs. Ariadne Oliver (a crime novelist) calls her friend, Hercule Poirot, asking for his help. But the question is: Is it one murder or two?

How could a 13-year-old be killed? How could she have enemies? As Hercule investigates, he learns that Joyce is an unpleasant little girl and a known liar. Superintendent Spence makes a return appearance.

Christie wrote this book late in her career. Not as tightly written as earlier novels, she complains about the British society she sees around her (this was written in 1969). However, Christie is ingenious in her plotting and unique solutions. I listened to this and Hugh Fraser narrated. TV audiences will remember him from his role as Captain Hastings in the Hercule Poirot Series.

One of my favorite Christie books about a young girl who states at a Halloween party to everyone that she knows a secret about a murder and then is found drowned in the apple bobbing barrel. This is a Poirot book and certainly kept my interest. What could be more fitting than a killing at a Halloween party!

A review from Amazon.com:
The lovable mystery writer, Mrs. Ariadne Oliver, is visiting a friend in a London suburb called Woodleigh Common and helping host a party for the community's teenagers. There are costumes, pumpkins, games, and...oh, yes...a murder, of course. The young girl who earlier in the evening had bragged that she had once witnessed a murder is found dead in the tub used to bob for apples. Mrs. Oliver hurries to London to locate her friend Hercule Poirot and ask for his assistance. Poirot would not think of turning down his old friend and immediately sets about learning all he can regarding the residents of Woodleigh Common. An au pair girl who has mysteriously vanished and a landscape architect who loves his work are just two of the interesting characters Poirot will deal with before his little grey cells put the pieces of the puzzle together in time to prevent another murder.
