This is part of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series of children's books (which a lot of adults love to read, as well!). This takes you into a later part of her and Almanzo'l life than the books before it. Laura is an adult in this one. Great reading, it gives you an understanding of what life was like many years ago!

Laura Ingalls, not yet sixteen, is now teaching school in a drafty shanty twelve miles from home. It's a terrifying job. most of the students are taller than she is, and she has to board all week with a hateful, crazy lady. Laura is miserable, but the money is needed to keep her blind sister, Mary, in school. And every Friday- in good or bad weather-Almanzo Wilder arrives in his sleigh, from across the desolate icy slough, to take her home to her family for the weekend. Could it be love?

I read the entire series many times as a kid. I loved these books & so did my daughter. I recommend this series for all kids who need a break from the sci-fi/fantasy/cartoon books that are out there now.

I'm a sap for romantic stories. I really loved this book as it told of Laura's time teaching school terms and spending time with Almanzo. I love that they went riding all the time together. They would ride for 40-60 miles in a night which means a long time of talking together, so that is sweet to me. It's as if they dated without even talking about it for three years. It was really also nice to see how hard working Laura was, willing to do things for others instead of herself. It is a quality you don't find too often in people. Also Laura and her father are the type to burst out into song, and I love that, because I'm like that too. Great story!

I remember reading this as a child, and then now as a woman in her kind of late 30's lol. There are alot of parts of the book that I had forgotten, and then there are scenes that I could have sworn that were in the book, and they weren't! Amazing what 25 years can do to your memory, lol. Anyway, I continue to enjoy the book!

Beautiful love story. At 16 years old Laura and 26 year old Almanzo begin to court. Laura takes her first job as a schoolteacher in a drafty shanty 12 miles from home. It is a terrifying job for a girls so young. She boards with a nasty lady and her pupils are taller than she. At the End of the week Almanzo comes to take Laura home for the weekend in his sleigh. Laura has to teach school to help pay for Mary's blind school. Is it love that brings him to take Laura home at the end of each week?
