I can't believe what happens in this book. It was intense and even better than most books. I felt so bad for VI and whoever else as had this happen to them. I won't give it away what did happen.

This is the ninth edition to the VI Warshawski books. Her old friend is involved in the life of a new tennis star, Lacey Dowell. Vic is returning from a visit with them when she almost hits a woman lying in the road. After a slimy cop tries to pin a hit and run on her, Vic tries to get to the bottom of it. A windy path leads from the ER to the state prison when the victim once stayed. Throw in the mix her old friend Murray Ryerson, who has a new TV news show and things are bound to get messy. When Vic goes undercover, no one is quite sure if she will escape alive.

V I Warshovski is a great character, and the messes she gets into are entertaining as well as being powerful commentary on unjust situations. Her unique friends, her amazing dogs - it's all in this one.

I've resisted posting my collection of VI Warshawski books but it is time to clear off the bookshelves. Sara Paretsky has developed on of the finest female private investigators in contemporary fiction. If you are looking for a great series, featuring a flawed human being, this one is for you. This story takes the detective from the wealthy enclaves of Chicago to a the world of prison life. I am sad to see these stories end and take my time as I near the last few pages. I usually wind up pulling a late night with one of these novels. Hope you do too!
