From Booklist:
A master storyteller pays homage to the horror genre via a collection of superbly twisted tales. Oates, an author who has consistently displayed a decided penchant for the peculiar and the macabre in her mainstream fiction, gives free rein to the dark side of her imagination, producing 16 gruesome, titillating, and bizarre short stories. These spine-tingling, surrealistic yarns represent yet another aspect of Oates' unparalleled literary genius and remarkable versatility.

Deliciously creepy stories to read in bed. The first one, titled the same as the book, Haunted, is particularly spooky, and the spookiness goes on from there, only getting better and better. Although she is an excellent writer, in every way, I am really fond of Oates's rendering of scary stories. They remind me of story telling around a campfire late at night. If that's your cup of tea, you'll love this book!
Typical "scary" Oates tales--loved it. This is from the back cover:

This collection plunges the reader into nightmare worlds where violence slips in unexpectedly, where reality turns into a
fun-house mirror, and where American culture goes awry in shocking, provocative ways.
