This is the illustrated catalog of an exhibition of clothing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because a lot of the dresses are from private collections, they are styles that are not often seen and as such they fill in some of the gaps in understanding what haute couture dresses were actually purchased and worn. The photographs are gorgeous but there aren't a lot of close-ups of detail and there is very little text, so the context for the dresses has to be supplied by other information or knowledge about fashion and art history.
