Very good; slow in the beginning but worth the work to get to the end.
Fascinating! It covers sooo much!
A great epic of a novel that I found hard to put down. Lots of great characters and plot keeps you going.
Storyteller Michener brings his trademark style this saga of the history and people of the
South Pacific. Another winner, especially for fans of historical fiction.

I had read this book years ago, just rented the movie and wanted to re-read the book. Enjoyed it even more this time.
One of my favorite books. I could not put it down...after the first people come into the story. You have to get through all the geology stuff first.
I love Hawaii (the state) and liked Hawaii (the book) okay - I don't know if it's a shift in "political correctness" or what - I found his "preachiness" heavy-handed and in many cases, wrong-minded.
The characters are very well-drawn however, and you care very much what happens to each of them, all the while wanting to shout at them that they're messing up something wonderful!

I must confess that I have read this one before. It is a terrific book and reading it again is like going to see old friends. The first part (about the volcanic formation of the islands) can be skipped as it is of minor consequence to the rest of the book. An absolute treasure for any library.
Most interesting novel. Starts from the formation of islands by volcanos, thru the habitation by polynesians, missionaries and into the fifties.
Really enjoyed this when I read it years ago, and had an attention span that could last for 1000 pages.
Michener is a wonderful story teller. His writing style is very detailed with lively characters and settings spanning generations. This book kept me captivated from cover to cover. Thoroughly recommend reading for all historical fiction fans.
Very indepth overview of Hawaii, a must read before you travel there.
My wife was taking a vacation to Hawaii and was looking forward to reading this historical novel. She could not finish it, as it was so foul. We did not even want to repost it and have someone else go through this disappointing experience, so we just threw it away.
One of my favorite Michener books. The multi-generation and multi-cultural character of this wonderful novel is breath-taking. Historical fiction that the reader can become engrossed in to the point of being there....being there as the Polynesians set out on their longboats for "somewhere".
Great read!!
Great read!!
