"English" (non-Amish) Claire Weatherly has left New York and her ex for a more peaceful life in Heavenly, Pennsylvania, where she has opened her shop "Heavenly Treasures". She is living at her aunt's B&B and has begun to make friends with the Amish in the community, including handsome widower Benjamine Miller. When Benjamine's brother, hot tempered Eli is suspected of the murder of Walter Snow, the man who had stolen money from many of the Amish townspeople, Claire becomes involved because the dead man's body is discovered feet from her shop. Enter Jakob Fisher, the new and very good looking detective to investigate. But, he has his roots in Heavenly.....he was raised Amish and left the community and is consequently shunned by his prior friends and his family. Claire has placed herself in the position of mediator between Jakob and the rest of the Amish folks.....I really liked this book...the characters are warm and believable....the Amish customs and beliefs interesting and informative...I will defiantly be looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This book started out slow IMO. I found it at the library & thought I'd give it a chance. It's a who-dun-it mystery with a touch of Amish. I will give the 2nd book a try.

First Line: Claire Weatherly looked around the empty stockroom, kneading the small of her back with stiff, tired fingers.

Claire Weatherly has finally called her marriage quits; her high-powered Wall Street husband is going to have to find someone else to berate and ignore. She decided to stay for a while with her Aunt Diane, the owner of the Sleep Heavenly Inn in Heavenly, Pennsylvania, but after six months, Claire knows she's found the lifestyle she's been craving and the place where she wants to live her life.

Her shop, Heavenly Treasures, is doing well, and Esther, the young Amish woman who helps her, is doing a wonderful job. The former tenant, Walter Snow, had cheated the local Amish out of a lot of money, but once they realized that Claire was not cut from the same cloth, more and more are bringing her their handmade crafts to sell. But when Walter Snow is found dead in the alley outside Heavenly Treasures, Claire knows that suspicion is going to fall on many of her new friends.

Hearse and Buggy is a light, quick, enjoyable read. As Bradford introduces her cast of characters, she imparts quite a bit of knowledge about the Amish, which should please most readers. Claire herself is an appealing main character who has always dreamed of a slower pace of life and has finally found it-- and several new friends as well. And now that she's found what she's been searching for, she's willing to defend it.

Aunt Diane is a level-headed, positive source of support for Claire, as well as being a fount of information about the area and its people. And in this first book, Claire wastes no time in having two very eligible, handsome men looking at her with interest and speculation.

One-- farmer Benjamin Miller-- is Amish and recently widowed. He's available in every way but his faith. The other-- police detective Jakob Fisher-- is Amish and was born and raised on a farm outside Heavenly; however, he decided to become a policeman after vowing to live in the Amish way. As a result, he is shunned and can have no contact with his family or any other member of the Amish faith.

Normally I can do without a strong romantic element in the books I read, but in this case, it's a very interesting angle and gives the characters much more depth. Claire, in particular, can be of great service to Jakob since she has a good relationship with the Amish. She can ask the questions that wouldn't be answered if Jakob were the one asking them.

I didn't find the mystery in this book very difficult to solve, and of the three Amish women portrayed in the book, two were a bit too fragile for my taste, but I did enjoy the book. Bradford has set the stage for what could be a very strong and interesting mystery series.

I enjoyed this book very much -- especially for the first in the series. I like the characters, the settings and the mystery involved. I am fascinated by the Amish -- to maintain their religion and beliefs in our world has to be so difficult. I also think the premise is interesting -- I wouldn't want to be the one having to live a life acceptable enough to the Amish where fathers will let their wives and daughters work for me or let me sell their products! I have already ordered book 2 and am looking forward to reading it!

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were interesting and the author did a great job of setting the scene in the Amish town of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

My favorite genre is mystery/suspense and I average 2 to 3 books a week. Most are very intense stories, and sometimes, I just need a little break.

That is why I enjoyed this book. The mystery is good (I was surprised by the ending). I live in Lancaster County, PA (Heavenly is a not a real town here) and so the Amish stories are easy for me to read because I know and understand the culture.

It's a charming and easy read. I have books 2 and 3 in my possession and expect I will enjoy them just as much for the same reasons.

This was a great read that was hard to put down. The evenly-paced drama and intriguing plot kept me on my toes as the story moved towards its conclusion. Claire is a strong character and I enjoyed seeing her live and work alongside the Amish, respecting their ways to gently get the necessary information to expose a murderer among them. This mystery boasts crisp writing, a comfortable tone, engaging dialogue and a great supporting cast that enhanced this captivating and delightfully charming debut series and I look forward to more visits with Claire and her friends for years to come.

Claire becomes emotionally involved with two men. On is Amish and the other was Amish. Will she follow her heart. That May not be wise.

Excellent series. I learned a lot about the Amish that I didn't know before and it is told in a way you think you are right there in the room with the characters.

This is a pretty good book. It can be a bit corny at times, but overall, I really enjoyed it. It kept me guessing until the end. I'll be reading the rest of the series.
