I love the combination of Florida's biology along with a good mystery and strong main character. I really like this author.
If you haven't discovered Doc Ford, you need to read this series! One of my favorites.
Back Cover....
Marine biologist and former secret operative Doc Ford is lazily poling his skiff along Southwest Florida's flat copper sea in search of sea anemones, when he runs into the body of the most hated man on Sanibel Island - Marvin Rios.
And when the island's simplest and sweetest resident is arrested for the murder, Doc heads straight into the heart of the sunshine state's dark side - to save his friend from being framed, and to save Sanibel Island from a rising tide of land-grab schemes, blood money and violence.

excellent entertainment, quirky characters, working my way though all of his books
doc ford series. always great.
I have loved all of his books. Characters are as familiar as family members and I miss them waiting for the next book.
Character development of protagonist Doc Ford continues in the 2nd of the 17-books series. I really enjoyed the description of the waters and mangroves around Sanibel and Captiva Islands. The Florida ambience and life of the fishing guides really comes through. This story is more plausible than the far-flung adventures that take place in the first book, Sanibel Flats. There is more subtlety, but it's still a rollicking fun adventure. I read it mostly while on a commuter bus, and felt as though I was far away in Florida.
Cannery Row meets Travis McGee. Reading the Doc Ford novels always takes me back to that classic Steinbeck community, and its unique characters. Combine it with the gritty crime genre of John D. MacDonald, and we have a thrilling, page-turner that can't be beat. ****
I've just started on this series and I keep getting more! Can't stop reading them.
This was my first exposure to Doc Ford and now I think I should read these books in order. I did not find Doc very well fleshed out as a leading character, nor did I find him all that interesting or likeable. The plot was interesting for awhile but I found myself rushing to get to the end (to start another Stephen Hunter book.) I will, however, find book one and give it another go as I did enjoy Carl Hiaasen's Florida stories.
