I love this historic romance set in the late 19th century. What an exciting read! I think I held my breath through half the story, wondering how each scene was going to play out.

Amaryllis Brigham is a complex character, whose life has been molded by unfortunate circumstances and misunderstandings. Her lack of guidance and friendships during her teen and young adult years appear to be a decided disadvantage, when thrust into a world of which she has little experience. I shook my head many times as her penchant for interrupting others left her with faulty understanding of the situation. Overall, Amaryllis is a strong, but vulnerable character that I like very much.

Nathan Everstone is an extremely complex character, who is difficult to understand. He is not only a complete mystery to Amaryllis, but also to the reader, as the story is told from her point of view. This somewhat unique perspective, in my opinion, adds to the mystique of the romance. There are quite a few interesting characters, and what would a Victorian novel be without the villain?

There is a strong spiritual element concerning God's ultimate plan for a person's life, and a sweet prayer that is such a lovely surprise.

This is a great story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. If you enjoy historical romance, The Hesitant Heiress is a spot-on choice.

I enjoyed this story. There was so much emotion from a woman who spent her life trying not to show any. I loved how Nathan brought this out of Amaryllis. There was some mystery as she tries to deal with the snippets of information she receives from others around her that changes her memories and perceptions of things that occurred in her past. A good story. (Full Review at my website)
