Ian Rankin is my new obsession, and so far this is the best of the lot. Edge-of-your-seat suspense, flawless plotting, convincing characters. Highly recommended.

Another good yarn by this well-respected British writer. His Inspector John Rebus is an interesting character with a hard-bitten exterior, quick with his wits, words and at times his fists, all packaged up with a very human center. The locale is Edinburgh, Scotland as absorbing a geographical place as the more familiar Oxford town in England. Here the Inspector deals with a mysterious murder with hints of satanism but ends with something more horrific and more timely. The story presents our world as we might easily recognize it and that is the connection which makes this work fun to read. Try the series out and you will enjoy the ride.

Inspector John Rebus investigates the death of a heroin junkie found in an abandoned housing complex. Was he the victim of a satanic cult?

The second in the Rebus series. Rebus investigates a junkie's death in a crumbling Edinburgh housing development, but soon uncovers that much more lies behind the death. Excellent, fast-paced book.

Rebus is a complex and entertaining hero and the mystery was intriguing. I need to read more of the series.

I was very dissapointed with "Knots and Crosses", the first in the Rebus series. I almost didn't give Rankin another shot, but am glad that I did. Hide and Seek finds Rebus promoted and pursing another slippery killer. This time around the police work is much better and the overall entertainment is as well. If you are interested in a detective series set outside of the US give this Scottish "inspector" a try.

Rankin has become my new favorite author. This book held my interest, had lots of twists and turns and getting to the end of this case didn't bring the satisfaction to Inspector Rebus that he had anticipated. Isn't that a lot like real life.

Definitely one of the better ones in the Rebus series. As soon as I was done with this one, I had to read the next. and the next! I am most certainly hooked on Rebus.
