This is the first historic romance I have ever read (if you don't count classics) so my opinion might not count as much as someone who is an avid reader of the genre. That being said I thought the book was okay. Some of the writing repeats itself in the beginning (even using the exact same sentences to give information) so it was a bit tedious. It was very mellow dramatic, akin to a soap opera. There were a few times I rolled my eyes and thought it might be too cheesy to continue but I did.

The characters were great. The bad guy was a caricature but Akira and Calin were a fun couple with some great dialogue in between them. Calin, even though a liar, was somehow loveable.

I really appreciated the research Killion did with the book. So many people just slap a kilt on the Scottish or Irish and call it historic. Killion actually researched the type of clothing historians believed (since it wasn't as well documentd as what the English wore at the time, especially with the women) the Scots wore at in 1502. No lazy Braveheart replica for her.

I enjoyed the book enough but I'm not sure if this would be a genre I would continue to read. It was entertaining though and certain scenes did bring tears to my eyes. It was also easier to read than I thought it would be.

Loved the characters. They show us it is often difficult to believe they are lovable. Sweet, tender, and sometimes dangerous love story. Betrayals are close at hand.
