Almost nothing at all, of an exciting natxire, is left on record. The Indian wars were at an end, and no massacres or exploits or adventures ai-e to be narrated. It was a silent epoch in our history. But, as Carlyle teaches, these silent periods in the history of a people are the most prolific of great things. It is a time when everything is building. Every man is attending to his own work. Xo great interference disturbs the welfare of all. The whole country is thriving together, and there is no jar or collision to attract attention.
