This is not my favorite Joey Hill book. That would be Rough Canvas. Holding The Cards is about a domme and a male sub. The male has some psychological issues to work through. So does the Domme. The emotional/psychological problems took precedence over the d/s relationship. I would have preferred less angst. If I want to read about past trauma, I'll pick a psychology book, not a book about d/s!
The Dom from Rough Canvas, Marcus, is a strong secondary character in the book. The sex is d/s though not overly hardcore or disturbing.

I usually really like Joey Hill but I didnt care for this one all that much. Too much emotional baggage and not enough satisfying sex.
While I'm a huge fan of the author's vivid prose, I didn't get as emotionally involved in this story as I did viscerally. I normally have little problems with the fact the author is a headhopper, but for some reason, it got in the way for me with this. However, this author's worst is still better than most authors' best, and the sheer glorious eroticism of her prose makes the book more than worth it.
