Jennifer J. (tattujenn) reviewed Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams on
ONE...TWO...FREDDY'S COMING FOR YOU.....
We all know him as the sadistic killer with the charred face, red & green sweater, razor fingers, and the razor sharp from the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' series, Freddy Kruger. His real name is Robert Englund, and this is the autobiography of such an extraordinary mane. Here, you get to mee the man under the iconic character from the start of his career to the character that changed his life and featured him on roster of the American Film Institute's "100 Greatest Heroes and Villains".
This memoir. published to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Nightmare on Elm Street (NOES) film, introduces you to the talented man who brought such a legendary character to life on the screen. Hear the story from Englund himself. He is not scary, evil or anything like Freddy Krueger. In reality, he is a funny, charming veteran of film (who loves all of his fans, mind you) who worked with screen legends such as Henry Fonda, Burt Reynolds, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Field, Jeff Bridges and he even got punched in the face by Richard Gere!! Hollywood Monster is packed with hilarious stories on and off the set, the inspiration for Freddy Kruger, the long makeup sessions, all of the soon-to-be-famous costar's, on set blunders, Mr. Englund's playful self-depreciation, some never-before-revealed trivia from on and off set, as well some antics from Robert's audition for Wes Craven to portray the horror icon. Hollywood Monster tells the story of how a regular guy never gave up on his dream of becoming an actor and how he landed the tole of a lifetime. This is the autobiography of Robert Englund!
Hollywood Monster is an enjoyable and interesting read. You will be surprised at how much more there is to this actor than just his depiction of Freddy Krueger. This autobiography (written along with Alan Goldsher) tells the story of Robert's entire movie career, not only the NOES franchise. You will be surprised at how hard he worked to get to where he is now.
In this book, the author talks more about the NOES films, he talks about many of his other roles as well. He is so much more than Freddy Krueger (but don't get me wrong, Krueger is the best IMO), Englund deals with a lot of happenings while filming the various movies he was in. But of course, he does get into depth of the role of his lifetime, and gives readers an in-depth look at the franchise that made him a pop icon. If you're interested in the man behind the burnt exterior of Freddy Krueger, you will not be disappointed.
With Introductions by the Masters of Horror - Wes Craven & Tobe Hooper!
5 out of 5 starts from me!!!!
