Hi, I'm extremely interested in the Shoah/Holocaust, both fiction and non-fiction, and I have some books posted that might be interesting for other Jews to read. I have "Daniel's Story" and "Friedrich." I'm also always looking for suggestions for other books on the subject, so if anyone knows of any, feel free to let me know! |

Sheryl what did you think about Those Who Save Us? I have it in my massive TBR pile |

Night by Elie Wiesel. A Very short book about his youth in Concentration Camps. This book details the horrors he experienced. Not for the weak. |
I liked Those Who Save Us. It's fiction, but it reads like a true story. It was a quick read, but good. |

Was going to suggest Night by Elie Wiesel, but I see Phyllis already has, so I'll just "Ditto" that:) |

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. |
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" by John Boyne is actually an older children's book, but it makes a good read for adults too. It tells the story of the Holocaust from a child's perspective. "The Zookeeper's Wife" by Diane Ackerman is another good one. Last Edited on: 7/25/08 3:28 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

SHADOW LIFE, A PORTRAIT OF ANNE FRANK AND HER FAMILY by Barry Denenberg. This book puts the story of Anne Frank and her family into a historical context and provides another perspective. The last section of the book documents the Franks' final days through an oral history of first person accounts from concentration camp survivors. Heartbreaking and compelling. |

Thanks guys! I've already read a few of those ("Night" like three times, and "Briar Rose" is one of my favorite books ever!) but I really appreciate your suggestions. I'll be adding them to my TBR pile soon! |

You might also find some ideas from tags. Under the club cloud tag you can find "holocaust" "Jewish" "jewish books for children" "holocaust for children", etc. I am reading Along The Tracks by Tamar Bergman and just recently watched the documentary I'm Still Here based on the diaries in the book Salvaged Pages: Young Writers' Diaries of the Holocaust by Alexandra Zapruder ETA: Alicia: My Story by Alicia Appleman-Jurman is one I just found and read again thanks to some help from the local library. I had to read it in highschool and could not remember the title. Last Edited on: 8/15/08 4:07 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

WOW... a very cool forum here! I didn't know this was here. I'm also interested in Holocaust books aimed at the young audience... that would be age 10 and younger (or 5th grade and younger). I will have to look up those cloud tags and the books mentioned previously to see if any would be what I'm looking for. Number the Stars is another one (for kids). Also, there is one for a younger audience... Max and... something. Another boy's name. Can't remember but will edit once I do. |

Based on an earlier post in this thread, I looked up the tag clouds (didn't know about them before) and I did not see "Jewish Books for Children" or "Holocaust for Children" listed. Are they being used but just not in the top 250 anymore?

try "Jewish children's" and then look for ones that are also tagged Holocaust. |

Marcia--welcome! Love your avatar! Check out this link. It's for youth and young adult books and is put out by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. |

How is it that I never noticed this forum before?? :-) Adding to the list a real gem: The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman. A masterful book. One of the few cases in which the book and movie are both phenomenal - and the movie was fairly true to the book, by the way. And, of course, Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally. Powerful. |

For a news story, "16 Violins Rescued from Holocaust Play Again", go to www.msn.com. It is an Associated Press item, date-lined Jerusalem, and updated at 4:33 p.m.CT, Thursday, Sept. 25. Shalom . . . |

I have recently posted Holocaust books on my shelf. Most are non-fiction memoirs that are only avaliable in Jewish bookstores-you won't see these in a Borders or Barnes and Noble. Have a look- PM me with any questions.

A good one I read last year was 'Scheisshaus Luck: Surviving the Unspeakable in Auschwitz and Dora' by Pierre Berg (Author), Brian Brock (Author). Just got published last year. Was my first read of anything concerning the holocaust, but has definitely made me want to read more about it.

Maybe this Young Adult novel from 2005 could be included in the Holocaust literature. It was "the most talked-about book of 2006", according to the back of my paperback edition. It's The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. And, while it may be found in the "Young Adult" section of the bookshop, (I find) it engrossing reading for an adult...particularly the parts of the story that deal with the lot of the Jews in World War Two Germany, especially that of the young man, Max. |

I recently read Clara's War by Clara Kramer and Sala's Gift by Ann Kirchner and highly recommend both of them. |
For years, I have seen Solly Ganor's Light One Candle changing lives
as a result of requiring my community college students to read it
while taking my humanities course.
It has been translated into German and is taught in various German school systems.

I recently read The Girl in the Green Sweater, and found it absolutely engrossing. I would second the suggestion of the Book Thief, I found that to be a compelling story, even though it is marketed as a young adult book. I also just got The Journal of Helene Berr, and have that on my TBR pile! :) Sorry if I duplicated what anyone else said - I tried to read through all the responses before answering.

Someone else posted Sala's Gift I would just like to Ditto that one that book was fantastic. |
