This is my absolute favorite of Brenda Novak's Dundee series. I have read it at least 6 times and it still grabs my heart. I love the whole Dundee series but this is the best.

This is a bit of a tear jerker, as you feel so sorry for the star of the book, Lucky. She is a strong character that sticks her guns in. But, amidst the tears, many laughs were found as you relate to the struggles of growing up, family, and demolition derbys (repairs on your home)!

Her mother always said if you couldnt be rich youd better be lucky!
When Lucky Caldwell was ten, her mother, Red the best-known hooker in Dundee, Idaho married Morris Caldwell, a wealthy and much older man. It didn't last, of course, but Morris's kindness was the highlight of Lucky's life.
Mike Hill, Morris's grandson, doesn't feel too well-disposed toward Red or her kids. He believes they alienated Morris from his family. Even Morris's Victorian mansion, on the property next to the Hill ranch, wasn't inherited by one of his grandchildren. Instead the house went to Lucky, who left it sitting empty for years.
Now that Red and Morris are both dead, Lucky has finally come back to Dundee. She plans to restore the derelict place and to look for her real father, who has to be one of three men named in her mother's diary.
That means Mike has a new neighbor.
One he doesn't want to like

Mike Hill, Morris's grandson and the person she'd always had a crush on as a kid, and his family have always made it clear she was as no good as her mother and made no bones about the fact they thought as Morris's first family they should have gotten the house she's living in again. The house of course has no heat, electricity or phone service and a storm has arrived with Lucky. Mike is the only close neighbor so she gets help from him as much as she hates to. She spends the night at his house, gives in to her wants and he becomes personally aware that she was as pure as her mother wasn't. They continue their relationship in secret and Mike gets to know Lucky and realizes she is not at all what his family and the whole town for that matter have believed. A woman has never gotten under his skin as Lucky has and his brother realizes he is in love with her before Mike does.
