I tried three times to read this one and each time I cringed at the saccharine-sweetness of the little, perfect town. Perhaps I'm not the target audience for this one.

Wonderful heartwarming book. It was so descriptive that it made me feel like I was actually in the small town of Mitford everytime I opened it, and I couldn't wait to read more each time I finally put it down at night. The characters are really personable. My favorite character is Dooley...love his interaction with all the townspeople. Took me a few chapters to really get into it, but I am so glad that I did...I highly, highly recommend this one!!!

A few years ago my mom and I were reading in our living room, and she was reading this book. Then all of a sudden, she started laughing until her face turned red. I was very confused and kept asking her what was so funny and she finally read me an excerpt from "At Home in Mitford" about Barnabus. Then I laughed until MY face was red. From then on, I was hooked. What a great series!

This is the first novel in the Mitford series. I love these books. Father Tim, the bachelor rector contends with a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away and an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Set in a small town, the action moves at a lazy, small-town pace. However, the tensions the characters must resolve in the book strike a real-life chord and held my attention through a late-night reading session.

I appreciate that the author has written this book for grown-ups without feeling obligated to toss in inappropriate language or situations to "prove" how grown-up it is. Karon has also made faith an integral part of the story--not just for the Episcipalian priest who is the main character, but for all the characters in different ways. I look forward to reading more about Mitford.

This is one of the best series of books I've ever read. The characters are so totally life like and you want so much to move to this town and immerse yourself with these folks! I have read the entire series twice and each time receive great pleasure from my trip to Mitford! I cannot recommend this series highly enough!

At Home in Mitford, the first book in a wonderfully escapeful and uplifting series, is a gem of a book. Don't be swayed by the idea that it is all fluff and nonsense; it is certainly NOT that. Jan Karon has the gift of being able to deal with serious issues without weighing the reader down emotionally. This is a great series for reading in the evening when you're tired and just want to relax. It's written in a unique format that allows you to break away if interrupted, yet get right back into it as well. I own each book in the series and have read them several times. I couldn't recommend them more highly. Enjoy!!

I bought this when I was part of a book club. It's well-written, all the characters are quirky and lovable, and, like Alexander McCall's books, written with a gentle humor.

However, I did dislike the constant references to Bible passages only by number that were apparently a largish part of "understanding" parts of the book. I don't read the bible, I'm not Christian, and it irritated the heck out of me. Of course, at the time, I didn't realize that the Mitford series was considered "Christian" fiction.

I guess Precious Ramotswe (of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency) is more my speed!

I started the Mitford series during a difficult time in my Christian walk. The lighthearted writing infused with subtle, simple Christian living was a perfect read to help me put life into perspective. Many "laugh out loud" moments. Yes, the setting is pretty utopic but we can all dream... Loved it - and the entire series.

I have heard many great things about this series, but if you are starting out with this one and you are a young reader like myself, you may want to start with another book. This book is about Father Tim, who is older and the book seems geared to older (40+) readers. I made it through about 1/3 of the book before I decided that I would try a different one, with characters I can relate to.

This is a really "feel good book". It isn't real life, but oh what a wonderful feeling you get sitting down opening the pages and going to Mitford. Lots of readers like to visit mind perfect towns in pages, this is a perfect read to relax with. Like watching Leave It To Beaver or the Andy Griffith show, not real but makes you feel so good to visit. Loved this series.

I have read each book in this series and feel at home in Mitford indeed! Father Tim and the various inhabitants are richly drawn. Uncle Billy is a hoot! You just have to read his jokes aloud to a friend. Father Tim is so human in his reactions to the problems he faces in his own life--not "stuffy".

Well, if you already know and like the Mitford books, you'll know about this one. If you have been living under a rock, the series concept is that of a small-town man of the cloth and his interactions with the other denizens of his small village. Never overtly religious, the author strives to be ecumenical and just to tell a sweet story about bucolic life. Imagine "Ballykissangel" crosssed with "The Gilmore Girls".

"At Home in Mitford" is the first book in Jan Karon's series about the small mountain town of Mitford, N.C., and its Episcopal priest, Father Tim Kavanagh. Fr. Tim is 60-ish and his quiet bachelor life is about to be invaded by a new neighbor, a dog "the size of a Buick" and an 11-year-old boy, Dooley Barlowe -- not to mention a jewel thief living in the church attic. Once you read this, you'll want to read the rest of the series, too.

One of the books in the Mitford / Father Tim series. I read all the books in the series and enjoyed every one of them. Light and easy reading with many heart warming stories 'within' a story about community, good stewardship, friendship, love and more. Not my usual genre but I enjoyed Jan Karon's writing immensely. All the books in the series made the rounds of my book loving friends, and we all agreed, we wish there was at least 'one' more to read.

Nice copy. Father Tim moves to Mitford, North Carolina where folks are friendly and neighborly. Mitford is beautiful and scenic, green hills, and pure air. Father Tim, a bachelor wants some family. God heard his prayer. A dog the size of a sofa moves in and will not leave. He acquires an unloved mountain boy whom he tries to show love. He also has an attractive neighbor who keeps walking through the hedge, a jewel thief, and a secret that is 60 years old. The book is great. I hsve read and loved all the mitford books.

The best word I can use to describe this book is "sweet." The second best would be "simple." Nothing profound happens, there's no murder or mayhem, adulterous sex or children switched at birth, but if you're just looking for a happy, simple read, this book will fit the bill. And sometimes it's nice to take a breather from the murder... mayhem.... Well, you get my drift.

Father Tim, a cherished small-town rector, is the steadfast soldier in this beloved slice of life story set in an American village where the grass is still green, the pickets are still white, and the air still smells sweet. The rector's forthright secretary, Emma Garret, worries about her employer, as she sees past his Christian cheerfulness into his aching loneliness. Slowly but surely, the empty places in Father Tim's heart do get filled. First with a gangly stray dog, later with a seemingly stray boy, and finally with the realization that he is stumbling into love with his independent and Christian-wise next-door neighbor. Much more than a gentle love story, this is a homespun tale about a town of endearing characters-- including a mysterious jewel thief--who are as quirky and popular as those of Mayberry, R.F.D. --Gail Hudson

The first novel in the Mitford Series. It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Time gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich, provincial comedy in which mysteries and miracles abound.

First in the Series. Father Tim, a cherished small-town rector, is the steadfast soldier in this beloved slice of life story set in an American village where the grass is still green, the pickets are still white, and the air still smells sweet.
