This is a wonderful, heartwarming book! I just loved it. It is written for YA, but ANYONE from 9 to 99 would enjoy it.

I really really enjoyed this book. Fast read. Especially interesting if you have siblings that stuck together through thick and thin. I am working on book #2 of the series now.

I agree with Carol S. and want to add that the book is (as usual) much better than the movie. (I think it was a made-for-TV movie.)

Lovely young adult novel about a group of siblings that find themselves on an incredible journey. The first book in the author's acclaimed Tillerman cycle.

This book is about four children who are abandoned by their mother. The oldest, Dicey, is thirteen years old and is left to find food and shelter for her three youngest siblings. Great book.

Absolutely one of the best books. My heart went out to these children. How could a mother do this and what smart little cookies they were to travel so far. In this time and age this would probaly never of been possible as it is so dangerous--but dangerous then too. This is an awsome read-i reccommend it to everyone who enjoys a good settle down, dig in read on a rainy day.

Homecoming is a book written for young adults reading level, but has such a good story that adults will enjoy it also.
It is about four children that are deserted by their mom and have to find their own way through towns and cities, trying to reach an aunt's house, where they think they will find shelter and safety.
The kids are resourceful and manage this trip with only about $12.00 in their pockets. They entertain themselves during many miles of walking and they try to operate with total integrity. While reading this book, I wanted to pick up the youngest child and hug him!
This book is a good reminder to us that when we help out someone in need, we have no idea what the long term benefits might be.

This is truly one of the best books that I have ever read. I did not find it "daunting" or a "hard read". I was completely hooked from the first page, and what I loved about it is how the characters grew more detailed the further along in the book that you read.

We love this book. I reread the whole Dicey series every few years, and I'm 54. My kids loved it and we first read it as a family read-aloud. The second book, 'Dicey's Song', won the Newbery, but this title is worthy of it also. I buy it as a gift for any friends who like books. It is compelling and well-written and you come to care for the family so much. How wonderful that she wrote more books so that when we sadly come to the end, we can just begin the next book!

Teen book - my granddaughter really enjoyed it. First in the Tillerman series from Newbery Medal winning author.
THe first book in the celebrated Tillerman cycle.
An ALA Best of the Best Book for young adults.

Great book about children who have been abandoned. They do what they have to do to get by and they stick together. It makes me wonder what I would have done in their situation.
This is a action fast moving book about 4 children surching for a home after their mother abandoned them. excelent read.
This book was quite interesting. The plot had a few unexpected twists... It keeps you guessing at what will be these children's next move. A touching story of determination and love, Homecoming is a must read for anyone who is up to the journey.
very good
This is actually the first of a "young/juvenile" series my daughter brought home from high school. She was raving about it so I opened it up and that was it. I soaked up this one and the entire series to follow. These kids (led by their oldest sister, Dicey) overcome some incredible odds and change the lives of others along the way.
First in the Tillerman family series. Family consists of four children deserted first by their father and then their mother.Wonderful read!
I really loved this book and the characters.
It's still true that their mother has abandoned the four Tillerman children somewhere in the middle of Connecticut. It's still true they have to find their way, somehow, to Great-aunt Cilla's house in Bridgeport, which may be their only hope of staying together as a family.
What kind of mother would leave her four kids in a parked car in a strange town and then just walk away?....So begins the story of Dicey, James, Sammy and Maybeth...4 brothers and sisters who must fend for themselves after their mother abandons them. A heartwarming story...I enjoyed this read!
This is a really good book
Very good book, Newberry Medal winning author
A very enjoyable story well written.
Family oriented book with alot of twist. very good read.
Nice heartwarming story. Well written
I read this book when I was a young teenager and it still sticks with me. Voigt has an amazing voice, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
I really enjoyed this book. It's a good read for everyone!
This book was good, but very sad. It made me want to donate a lot of money.
The story of three siblings abandoned by their mother in a mall parking lot.
Four kids are abandoned by their parents, and the oldest, 13 year old Dicey takes care of them and tries to find new parents to love and take them all. A heart wrencher.
SOmetimes sad but often insipering
1989 mass-market paperback (written in 1981) with orange cover.
From the back cover
Diceys mother didnt make many explanations. Maybe thats why she didnt explain her mysterious behaviour the night she packed up the whole family and sped off into the night . . . Or why she pulled the car into a shopping center the next morning and just walked away without a goodbye.
Now Dicey, James, Sammy, and Maybeth were stranded in an unknown town, and it seemed that every grownup in the country was against them. That meant ducking authorities, sleeping in cemeteries, and doing anything to keep clear of foster homes. It also meant walking for miles and miles. . . .
But Dicey hadnt given up completely; she knew there must be one adult she could trust. And she figured if she could just keep her brothers and sister together, eventually theyd have their homecoming.

The cover of this book is slightly worn, although the pages are in good condition. The book I have is an older copy, so it has a diffferent cover, but it is the same exact story.
We've had this book for a long time. The pages are intact and the book is readable, but the book has some obvious signs of age.
