If you are familiar with A. L Rowse you know he has a sly style of telling yarns to an in set. This book is no exception. It is fun to read for many but some will be put off by the Oxford don's Tuesday tea in my rooms drollness. While not unenjoyable I think the history of same gender attraction is far less white, English, upper class, university educated and male than Rowse could imagine. If one seeks a broader world view read a less colonial author. In sum, fun to read, narrow in focus and foggy with rule Britannia. My recommendation for a good survey tome with few peers would be Louis Crompton's Homosexuality and Civilization.
