This book is good- not terrific- but a good read at night before bed- one you can go back too.
This book was a little like Paulo Coelho. Although, he is the better writer.
I found this book a bit horrifying in certain places. Mainly, I found the main character horrifying. First, she calls everyone whom she does not understand "stupid" or "crazy." I really dislike that type of ignorance. There is no need to call something stupid if one doesn't understand it.
Yet, the main character is the one who DRUGS a man in order to get him to have sex with her, and almost KILLS him. To me, that is just nonredeemable. I am pretty horrified by this because, as a feminist, I don't want a world where women start drugging men for sex. I want a world where people respect one another enough to never drug anyone.
I thought the main character had some severe psychological problems, which go untreated and unnoticed. She ruined the whole book for me. The book had the potential to be good, if only the main character was portrayed in a more intelligent/rational/likable way.
I did like the facts and tidbits the author put in about flowers and plants. I also liked all the other characters. It's just hard to enjoy a book where you don't like the main character.

I picked up this book only because the title sounded interesting. I didn't read any reviews on it, nor did I read through the description. They say not to judge a book by it's cover, but I did, and I'm happy.
This was a very good book. It has love, romance, lust, greed, passion, death, spirituality, and just about everything else. For a debut novel, I'd say that Margot Berwin did a great job. She's left me with high expectations for her next novel.
The story takes place in New York and Mexico, the Yucatan to be specific. As Lila, Armand, Diego, and Exley are all on the hunt for the illusive Nine Plants of Desire. Oh what a tangled web Ms. Berwin has weaved...
This story was exciting. It was pretty fast paced and it kept me wanting more. The stories behind the nine magical and mystical plants are great. Even with all that Lila went through I want to find these plants. I did do some research on some of the nine and they really do have stories just as great as they are given in this book. (I LOVE when an author does great research!)
I was captivated from the first line to the last. I will be looking for a second novel for sure!
