Very good. Made me feel sorry for some of the characters.
A great book focusing on the Harkonnen's history. Again, not a good introduction to the Dune series as a whole, but provides insight and backstory to the original series. A good addition to the Dune collection.

Does not measure up to the standards of the Dune sage, not even to it's immediate predecessor Dune:House Atredies. This book is to Dune: God Emperor (arguably the least of the original stories) what Star Wars Attack of the Clones is to The Empire Strikes Back.
There is much incongruity from the original series. For example the Bene Tleilax cloning abilities are known throughout the Lansrad (which shouldn't happen until their well after their success with the Duncan Idaho ghola in Dune Messiah). The authors have Emperor Shadam receiving "streams of information" through crystals.
At least in House Atredies, even if the dialogue wasn't up to the senior Herbert's standards, one had the feeling that he might have envisioned such a plot. In this story the plot is simply too weak and
everything is over explained.

Im a DUNE fan (Frank Herbert) from many years ago. Though the writing style is different, this book gives a great insight to the happenings of the Dune world prehistory of Frank Herbert. A must for any Dune fan.
It's a good book, but it's no Dune. It provides a great background on the Baron, though.
Excellent book by Frank Herbert's successor: his son. This takes up where book one leaves off (House Atreides), focusing on the Harkonnens, still in the prequel period. Although well-written in its own right, it's flavor is slightly different from Frank's writing.

Really good.
I ordered this book for my 12 year old son, he's been reading the entire Dune Series and he completed this one in about 2 days! When a 12 year old turns off the computer to read a book you know it has a lot going for it!
