A great concept, a rather Confucian quasi-magical thinking that if only the ruler (or parent) will order his and her own lives and thoughts properly, the entire universe (or children) will fall in order with little effort. But in the end I found that this book had very little practical advice despite the subtitle. It was a series of observations clearly tailored to a public speakers crowd--clearly a vanity project by the author who was told that she had clever things to say and she might as well write a book. Read 1-2-3 Magic instead or How to talk so children will listen (and vice versa) for actual concrete steps about how to get your children to behave.

This book will teach you how to teach your children to behave, how to listen- the first time, and how to be more cooperative. It shows you how to be consistent and manage your anger. It explains how to prevent arguments and power struggles. This book will make discipline simple and your life easier. You will even learn how to enjoy being a parent.

Excellent advice on how to use your words and behaviors as positive models for your children. Fabulous.

My almost-5 year old is pretty well-behaved and even though this book is oriented towards "badly" behaving kids, it is full of practical and thoughtful advice about enhancing children's self-esteem, focusing on positive behaviors, dealing with peer pressure, and other daily life issues. It is less of a cookbook style to parenting, and more about encouraging parents to consider their goals for the children and their own impact on their children's behavior.
Helps a bunch.

A lot of excellent ideas if you have a difficult, spirited, strong-willed, or whatever you choose to call it child. I will definitely be putting these ideas to use!

I read this book when my children were about 9 and 14. It was so valuable for working with and understating my 9 year old. I wish I had read it when my 14 year old was younger. After I read it, I attended a "support" group for moms of kids at my younger child's elementary school hosted by one of the counselors. She brought up this book and she and I raved about it to the other moms. It is a super book and everyone should read it and reflect on the thoughts in it.
