This was extremely helpful in planning meals that my husband could eat after his doctor put him on a low carb diet for health reasons. He has lost 80 pounds, lowered his blood sugars and improved all his blood test results using information from this book. The book includes ideas of how to plan to cheat without completely blowing all weight loss and feeling horrible. He has managed to keep his weight off for over 3 years at this point. A very readable book that starts with the assumption that your "Mileage May Vary" so what works for one person may need to be adjusted for someone else. Dana also suggests ways to vary your diet. If you are going to try any low-carb diet, I would recommend this book for additional (and very useful) information.

Excellent information on most types of low-carb diet. A great informative book from an author with a sense of humor as well!

There is much to like in Carpenter's books. She's a great coach, she shares lots of information and tips, and she writes nicely (is funny and easy to read). I like her book, and if losing weight were my only problem I'd probably follow her program because if only weight is the problem, it could be solved through her program. I think if someone has the carb-processing and the blood-sugar problems, they might require something a bit more stringent and might want to read PROTEIN POWER LIFEPLAN to discover more about metabolism and why it works the way it does, what we have to do in order to get it running correctly, and why that's all true. And also there's good advice from Dr. Bernstein in his book DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION, which discusses both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Even though some doctors now admit that tye 2 is completely curable through diet, it's easier to do with more knowledge rather than less, since it's a life-and-death problem. Dr. Bernstein's info solidified my commitment to the Protein Power Lifeplan and I've lost 50 pounds in one year and changed my health profile from quite ill to well (and feeling great). There are many books that contain some info that most can use; some books appeal to some people who need the chattier more personal approach; others (like me) like to know all the medical and scientific info in order to understand why, how, what, and what to do. Almost every book I've read on the subject of low-carbing, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, good carloies/bad calories (Gary Taubes book), and problems with grain (WHEAT BELLY, Dr. Davis' book) have helped build the complete picture that I sought for decades but that wasn't clear until recently. Now I know what I have to do to remain healthy, and why.
