I'm looking for funny mysteries or chiclit books... what's your favorite ? |
|||
|

Anything by Mary Kay Andrews! Sometimes I feel like a one woman fan club. I recommend her to anyone looking for something funny with a little substance! |

Maddy Hunter. She's funny. |

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series! LOL funny! The grandma is my favorite character! |

SHARI SHATTUCK IS OK AND SPARKLE HAYTER IS GOOD TOO |

I have to agree with Suzanne. Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is the funniest
books I've ever read. Funny, Sexy, Whodunnit. Who could ask for more?

Victoria Laurie's 'psychic eye' mysteries are funny/cute as well as her ghosthunters mystery that's out. I laughed throughout these but they were more cutefunny that LOL and the 2nd in the psychic eye series was hilarious at the wedding... Meg Cabot's 'size 12 is not fat' and 'size 14 is not at either' were funny and big boned is out this month or next (the 3rd in the heather wells mysteries) ditto for evanovich's plum series. kyra davis has 3 out in a series about sophie katz..there are probably more chick lit and have stronger language and sorta an attitude about 'it's all about m e' that being said I enjoyed the 1st 2 and plan to read the 3rd soon. |

Try Rita Mae Brown her cats and dog help solve mysteries. I had to laugh when I read this one about funny mysteries reminds me of telling my husband I wish I could find a good sensible murder mystery like Agatha Christies years ago. He thought I was crazy as he didn't think there was anything sensible about murder. LOL Barb |

Sue Grafton, start with A is for Alibi. Alexander McCall-Smith, start with The Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency. |

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is the greatest I have ever found. didn't much care for her other books but this series is great. Makes you laugh so hard u cry, & also has a story line to boot. They just don't come any funnier than this. |

Elaine Viets' Dead End Job Mystery series are pretty funny! |

Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, as mentioned above (and for those who like recorded books are also great in that form.) I also recommend Sparkle Hayter's Robin Hudson mysteries. The title of the first is: What's A Girl Gotta Do? Canadian reporter as protagonist. Very funny. |

MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin series is amusing. Just the titles are funny - Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener, for instance. |

Charlotte MacLeod wrote 2 mystery series that I found hilarious. I thought these were best when read in order, and some of them were hard to find. "The Family Vault" is the first in one series, and the other series features Peter Shandy. I hope you can find them. They were quite fun! |

I have to agree on Janet Evanovich, and I haven't found anything funnier since...believe me I looked. But, Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson series is cute, starting with The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder. The Chocoholic Series is good if I could remember the author (darn it, why do I keep forgetting her name!?)... Sarah Strohmeyer has the Bubbles Yablonsky series, they're funny as well (But Bubbles is a real ditz). Suzanne Enoch's (as mentioned above) Samantha Jellicoe series is really good (I love them), but you're running into more romance genre there. |

I'm trying to summarize all of the author's mentioned here. I am attempting alphabetical order, by the author's last name, followed by a brief synopsis of the comments for each author and/or book. This discussion has given me some good ideas of new authors to try, I've already gotten a couple of orders in and some more on my wish list. Andrews, Mary Kay - funny with substance Beaton, MC - Agatha Raisin series- funny titles, i.e. Agatha Raisin And The Potted Gardener Brown, Rita Mae - a cat and dog help solve mysteries Cabot, Meg - Size 12 Is Not Fat Carl, Joanna - The Chocoholic Series Davis, Kyra - 3 in a series about Sophie Katz - more like chick lit and an "It's all about me" attitude Enoch, Suzanne - Start with Don't Look Down, Samantha Jellico series - more romance than mystery Evanovich, Janet - Stephanie Plum series -start with One For The Money Fluke, Joanne - Hannah Swenson series, start with The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder Gardiner, Jenny - Sleeping With Ward Cleaver - hallarious Grafton, Sue - Kinsey Mahone series - start with A Is For Alibi Hayter, Sparkle - Robin Hudson series - start with What's A Girl Gotta Do? Hunter, Maddy - Funny Laurie, Victoria - Psychic Eye mystery series and Ghosthunter mystery series MacLeod, Charlotte - start with The Family Vault, or the series featuring Peter Shandy McCall-Smith, Alexander - Start with The Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency Neil, Fiona - Slummy Mummy series Shattuck, Shari Strohmeyer, Sarah -The Bubbles Yablonsky series, funny, but Bubbles is a real ditz Viets, Elaine - Dead End Job Mysteries PM me to add on or edit the above list. I do think that you need to watch what you are getting. I do not like any of Janet Evanovich's books other than the Stephanie Plum series, and, believe me, I've tried. Ditto for the Alexander McCall Smith books, it needs to be The Ladies No. 1 Detective series and not his other series. Add another vote for Sparkle Hayter. Great funny mysteries. While Sue Grafton's book have a dry humor through them, I don't think of them as "funny". |

Unfortunately, I did not really like a lot of them. It is kind of depressing. I like Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich, Alexander McCall-Smith, and Tony Hillerman (he was not mentioned above). I have read all of the books by the authors I do like. I am having a difficult time finding another author to read. The good thing is, I was able to post the books I tried and did not like on Book Bazzar just now. Well, I am off to try some other authors. I am sure I will find someone, eventually. Happy Reading everyone, Marla Maye |

It seems that the authors people mention are female. Just wondering. Marla Maye |

If you haven't read the book "Sleeping With Ward Cleaver" by Jenny Gardiner - you should!!! It is hillarious! Anyone read this one? Renee' |

Marla: I like the authors you listed (other than Evanovitch which I haven't read) and think most of them have a different flavor of humor than most of the humor cozy mysteries. I don't think of Hillerman as funny at all. You might try Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason series. I really enjoy those, and I also really like Hillerman, Grafton, and at least the one McCall-Smith I've read. You might also enjoy Agatha Christie's Hercule Periot books--those are a love/hate with me--I'm not fond of one of the narrators she uses, but enjoy the books overall. |

I've read most of Agatha Christie, starting when I was much younger. I think you are right, Tony Hillerman is not chick lit. But I like him. He is ususally not to graphic in his descriptions of murder. What would Tony Hillerman be called? Western/mystery? He is not all about cowboys so that is why I have trouble saying that would be it. Maybe Native American/mystery. Marla Maye |
