Despite it's provocative cover, Hurts So Good is not specifically a book about masochism in a sexual context (though it is certainly discussed). The author is a self-professed masochist, but also a scientist who is interested in the body's response to pain and why people willingly afflict pain upon themselves. They visit with scientists and psychologists, and introduces the reader to masochists (some self-described and others who would refute the label) who are willing to explain their motivations and share the positives they take from painful experiences. Their profiles include people who allow themselves to be suspended in the air by their body piercings, martial arts practicioners, competative hot chili pepper eaters, ultra marathon runners, and polar plunge participants. Where possible, the author participates and shares their own experiences.

I enjoyed the writing style which is deeply personal (the author discusses their own struggles with eating disorders and emotional and physical abuse) but also at times very funny. This book is fascinating - I read it in two sittings.
