I have an interest in the world in general, Spain in particular, so I really wanted to like this book and was excited to get it. And while it contains interesting information and stories, it's rather like listening to an elderly relative drone on and on and on and on... After slogging through the first three chapters, I have set it aside.

I read this book before a trip to Spain and found it very helpful - not in specific things to see but in understanding what I did see. Even though it was written a long time ago it is still very evocative of the country. Also, it is very well written.

I read this Michener novel after I had spent a couple of months travelling around Spain, so I was able to appreciate his writing all the more.

Still has a place on my bookshelf, waiting for a 3rd reading.
