Maura is a forensic pathologist/coroner and is attending a medical conference in cold, snowy Wyoming. Being disheartened with a relationship she left back home that she has to keep in secret, Maura runs into an old college buddy. She was going to stay a day longer to explore the area, but is talked into going on an impromptu ski trip with the buddy, his 13 year old daughter, and two other adult friends. During the trip to the ski resort in a winter storm, their SUV becomes stranded on a deserted road. They decide to walk to a place called Kingdom Come. There they find eerily deserted houses, but no people. With nothing else to do, they try to make the best of it; after all, they have shelter, firewood, and food, right?
This book was exciting, with surprises thrown in with the twists and turns to keep the reader wondering what the heck is going on. I listened to this during my work commute and found myself sitting in the car, not wanting to stop listening. With a surprising ending that I didnt see coming, it makes me want to get the next book to see if author Tess Gerritsen continues the storyline on. Excellent read.
