This is an epic tale of a ship in 6/1913, the H.M.C.S. Karluk, that embarked on the most elaborate Arctic expedition in History, with the largest scientific staff ever taken on such a journey. 6 wks. later, the ship was frozen in a massive block of ice and the leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, abandoned everyone on board. Drawing on the diaries of the rescued and the perished and even an interview with a living survivor the author recreates with astonishing accuracy and immediacy the ill fated voyage and the desperate attempts to find a way hoome from the icy wastes of the Artic.

Great story. A little long but an amazing tale of survival against the odds.

A fantastically moving story about the wreck of the Karluk and the artic explorers. Very readable and educational. Great read, as was Ernest Shackleton's "Endurance".

Very interesting non-fiction book, I read in winter when it was cold outside, but as you read the book you realize winter is balmy here compared to the conditions the men, one woman and two children were in. At the end, my own feeling was thank goodness for the Inuit family who you can't help feeling none of the rest would have made it through without. It wasn't really told that way, but I read between the lines on who did the hunting, who helped with warm clothes, who knew what was edible and how to cook it....
