An English teacher from a private school in Philadelphia encounters a case of domestic abuse and is compelled to try to rescue the woman-once she is able to track her down from messages written anonymously in the margins of a used book. Her romance with a certain police detective runs into some rough spots, including the visit of one of his old flames. Our heroine's mother, as in earlier Amanda Peper books, is still shamelessly playing matchmaker. The mystery is engaging, with both serious and humorous aspects.
