This work addresses one of the quandaries of a translator of the Hebrew Bible. The answer to the question "What did this mean?" is not always self-evident. Even so, that is the solution adopted by the majority of modern Bible versions, leaving the reader to guess the meaning of the expression?for better or worse. In the search for meaning, one might naturally turn to Hebrew lexicons. The information provided there is based on both traditional sources and recent research. The traditional information can sometimes be traced very far back, but can scarcely be verified by philological means. Lexicon compilers do not always offer the means to check the soundness of their proposals that are based on recent research. Furthermore, their methods are sometimes questionable, as is the case with the recourse to etymology or to other Semitic languages of the Ancient Near East. The aim of this study is to shed light on the meaning of a limited selection of idiomatic expressions by applying the method of componential analysis. This method was popularized and refined in the works of E. A. Nida, who wrote primarily for translators of the United Bible Societies. In that context, it was utilized chiefly in the search for equivalents in the target languages of Bible translation projects, but only rarely has it been applied to the decipherment of the biblical languages themselves.
